TE Davon Mitchell Plans Summer Official Visit With Gamecocks
SPORTSTALK / March 3, 2023USC has become a highly attractive destination for tight ends, and the Gamecocks have targeted Davon Mitchell (6-4 245) of Los Alamitos, CA as a top target for the 2024 class. The competition will be stiff. Mitchell has named a top 11 of the Gamecocks, Tennessee, Penn State, Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, Southern Cal, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Georgia.
The Gamecocks are in the position they are with Mitchell because of new offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. He was the tight ends coach at Arkansas before Shane Beamer hired him. One of his top prospects for the Razorbacks was Mitchell.
“When Coach Loggains was at Arkansas, I had a real close relationship with him,” Mitchell said. “He was somebody that I wanted to play for. That’s how me and South Carolina got that relationship was basically because of him. I like everything about him. He’s an honest man. He’s always talking about how he’s going to use me and how I’m a big priority for them.”
Mitchell has not visited USC and he’s still learning about the program. He participated in a virtual visit with the staff Thursday and he plans to take an official visit in June. The Gamecocks may be a dark horse with him right now, but having Loggains there is enough for him to have the Gamecocks on his short list.
“I wasn’t like too high on them at first until Coach Loggains got there,” Mitchell said. “I’ve seen what he’s done with his tight ends at Arkansas. I kind of like what he had going on there with Trey Knox and stuff like that.”
Mitchell attended January junior days at Texas A&M and Oklahoma. He plans to visit Tennessee March 24th and is also looking at Southern Cal and Penn State for spring visits. He does not foresee making a decision until his season at the earliest. By then he’ll know the answer to the key recruiting question in is mind.
“Who keeps the relationship with me and who wants the best for me and who can develop me,” Mitchell said.
