4 star TE Kevin Crosby Jr. (6-2 240) of Bamberg-Ehrhardt, rated as one of the top prospects in South Carolina for the 2014 class, announced a commitment to USC Saturday afternoon at a news conference at the Savannah Creek Baptist Church in Ehrhardt. Crosby picked the Gamecocks over Alabama and Clemson after narrowing his list from over 50 offers. "It feels great, I'm part of Gamecock Nation and the Gamecock family," Crosby Jr. said. USC was his first offer in the 9th grade and thus had the early lead for Crosby Jr. At one point, that lead vanished. "At first I was kind of confused because I didn't know if they were recruiting me as a tight end or a linebacker," he said. "My love is to play tight end. Coach (Steve) Spurrier came down here and talked to my parents and my coach and he told them we definitely want Crosby to play tight end. After that it just blew them over the top." But not by much as Alabama made a strong push, especially the Crimson Tide. "It's hard to say no to Alabama," he said. "It's Alabama, national champions. It's Nick Saban. It's hard to say no to those guys. But you've got to go with what's best for you. I wouldn't mind going there but I felt like Carolina was my best fit." Especially with how the Gamecocks' use their tight end. "They use two tight ends a lot," he said. "I feel like I can be one of those tight ends in the game at the same time and I can do big things at that position. I'm a very physical player. I come from the defensive side of the ball and I carry my defensive mentality over to the offensive side of the ball." Last season Crosby Jr. had 36 catches for 786 yards and 14 touchdowns. On defense, he had 68 tackles with 8 sacks and 3 interceptions, 2 returned for touchdowns. He's the 5th commitment for USC's 2014 class and the 4th from the state.
