First of all, I have no problems with Owens as a person and he seems like a good kid. Here is the situation as best as I can figure:

1. We still have a chance to land Slayton at WR and GA Mangus is on the beat here. Slayton is by far the superior prospect and would most likely be a difference maker for us.

2. Christian Owens was just dropped, happily, by UGA.

3. Owens is a classic tweener, in that he doesn't possess SEC level athleticism as a WR, but lacks the size/strength to play TE effectively. The big chance we are taking is that he has awesome hands and could make tough catches even while being closely guarded.

4. Owens doesn't have a plethora or top notch options so close to his "decommittment."

Here are my questions:

1. Why are we agreeing to take his commitment so quickly? Why not bring him in for an unofficial for the S. alabama game to establish a good, working relationship. It's not like good options are banging down his door.

2. Is this another issue of coaches not working well together for what makes the most sense for the program? If Mangus feels like we have a good shot at Slayton, then jr. needs to slow his roll and not sabotage his efforts. We've had enough below par WR reaches come through the program lately ( DL Moore, WR from Dillon...etc), but have not signed anyone like Darius Slayton ( A good sized WR with blazing speed).

Maybe Slayton has dropped us behind the scenes and this is the best we can do at WR.....it's frustrating in either scenario.

Good insight. Thanks. I do think we need receivers who can catch the ball in traffic, though. Don't underestimate good hands.
