The Gamecocks’ numbers game

April 08, 2017

There’s been plenty of roster turnover since Will Muschamp arrived at South Carolina in December of 2015.

With spring practice 2017 now in the rearview mirror, we takes a look at the Gamecocks roster, to see how the numbers look.

Below is an unofficial count of South Carolina’s scholarship total, which can go no higher than 85. Assuming the numbers are correct, the Gamecocks exited with 53 players on scholarship this spring. That figure did not count the mid-year enrollees, who were a part of the 24-man signing class.

The two figures add up to 77, which means there’s some room to add more scholarship players to the roster.

Among the walk-on players on the roster, transfer running backs Ty’Son Williams and Caleb Kinlaw are the two most likely to be placed on scholarship. Kicker Alex Woznick, punter Michael Almond and defensive back Javon Charleston could also be considered as scholarship candidates.

South Carolina is also exploring the graduate transfer market. Minnesota defensive end Gaelin Elmore is scheduled to make an official visit with the Gamecocks, starting on Sunday. Louisville cornerback Shaq Wiggins is another option.

Below is the position-by-position count of the returning players on the spring roster, which totaled 53.

Quarterback – 2

Jake Bentley

Michael Scarnecchia

Running Back – 4

Mon Denson

Rico Dowdle

C.J. Freeman
