One can go on and on about small indications and styles of play, talent, and coaching decisions that would be a factor in next weeks game vs UGA, and I would like to say I'm not one of those people, but I know I'm gonna unload all my thoughts on this thread.
Todd Gurley supposedly dominated Clemson all by himself and ended up with 198 yards on the ground and -5 yards receiving. It became a trend on twitter #GurleyforHeisman, and Gurley created so much of a momentum swing, Clemson lost it and fell apart in the late 3rd quarter. Now the insinuation I stated in your mind was that now I'm gonna give reasons why Todd Gurley is not all that, but I assure you, I'm just preparing to make Dabo look like an idiot again. This -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3sVq0M5kYQ is my reference point for why Dabo is a fool. Out of 198 yards from Gurley, 100 of them came off one play; the punt return for a touchdown. Well normally when you hear a player ran a ball back 100 yards you think, "Wow, what an unbelievable player, he must've ran over and around every player on the field to get there. Great job." Nope. This is just one of the worst coverage plays in punt return history. When Gurley takes the ball, 6 guys go in front of Gurley to create a wall to run behind. This usually happens, and it's called blocking, but usually the defenders try to go THROUGH the wall, not run to the other side of the field to get around it. I swear, Gurley only had to sidestep one player at the 50 yard line in order to run as straight as an arrow to the end zone. In what universe would you tell your players to run completely around the entire wall. If Clemson had gone through the wall, they would've filled the gaps and took out the blockers but everybody ran around. It's just pitiful play and coaching. Another play of example was at 1:31 in the video. Clemson lines up Blitzing on the right side. The Linebackers are clumped together, basically making out, their so close to each other. The safeties are also on the right side of the field. There is only one corner who is covering a receiver on the entire left side of the field. So when UGA snaps it off and hands it to Gurley, he obviously runs left, where the guard is creating a hole on the left side with ease. Now, if the positioning of Clemson sounded dumb, what they did next was worse. The one corner on the left side of the field allowed the receiver to drag him back all the way to the end zone, the 3 clumped linebackers shifted right into the trenches, and the safeties stood still. Gurley is literally not within an 8-9 yard radius of anybody, Georgia or Clemson. The only chance Clemson had was when Gurley was at the 3 yard line when the corner finally decided to go for Gurley, and the safety decided to fall left 3 yards. It was way too late. I have no idea what they're coaching over at Clemson, but now I understand what Dabo means when he stated in the offseason he's truly dissapointed in his team and he thinks they won't succeed. I heard all the time, "practice was horrible.", "Our offense can't pull it together.", "kids were out there jogging during skels". This being said, I believe Gurley is a great running back, and he is gonna give us a hard time next week, but I wanted to say Clemson could've had Gurley under 100 by 10 or 20 if they simply decided to layer the defense out, or cover at all, much less give effort into coverage.
That rave being said and done, let's actually get to the main keys for contending seriously against UGA next week.
1. Have the majority of possession time - Run the clock, keep the defense off and well rested, and well coordinated
2. GET LOUD - This is our job; in 2012 it didn't even matter how good Georgia even was, we were so loud, they even admitted they couldn't communicate right half the game
3. Pressure Hutson Mason, but DO NOT blitz - We need to get in Mason's face as much as possible. It's his first away game, and we have one of the hardest atmospheres to play in, but we learned the hard way we can't leave the field wide open trying to pressure a new QB vs aTm. We can't give another 600 yards away like that. This being said, our D-line isn't good enough to pressure vs all the experience on the Georgia O-line. And we need to contain Gurley, but Clemson suffered greatly blitzing doing that. Our best bet is to keep it layered to stop Gurley and make Hutson Mason feel like he has no options to throw to. That's enough pressure it takes to make a quarterback on his first away game to crack. Containing Gurley would also pressure Mason at the same time.
4. Play 4-3, - for the love of god, don't play 3-4.
5. Tackle - We got better at this at the ECU game. Still needs lot's of improvement however. Just fill up the field and pressure the receivers and make sure to tack them at the waste. NO ARM TACKLING
6. Keep Thompson feeling like he's not pressured - The O-line needs too keep Thompson comfortable in the pocket. We didn't show all of our long ball tricks vs ECU and long ball should be expected this game to Byrd, Jones, Roland, ect... magic will happen if we can keep Thompson calm.
That's just my thoughts. Can't wait for the game, should be a great matchup! Go cocks
