Were already athletic directors at significant athletic programs. Mike McGee was at Southern California, Eric Hyman at TCU. I think both of those men turned out to be excellent athletic directors for us. Neither, I believe, had any previous significant association with our school. We should probably give strong consideration to continuing that hiring pattern.
Nothing against Ray Tanner, who is a fantastic baseball coach, but whose only athletic administration experience is as an assistant A.D. at N.C. State and whose duties in that position I don't know. I believe that if he is interested in the job, he has earned the courtesy of an interview.
Nothing against Brad Edwards, about whom I know little except that Newberry is hardly in the same universe as Southern Cal, TCU and Carolina.
I believe our athletic program is at a level that this will be a highly attractive job for successful athletic administrators. I also think that our president and BOT have the intelligence and maturity to make a quality hire.
