The latest on 2018 center Hank Manos
March 02, 2017
CHAPIN, S.C. — In January, when South Carolina offensive line coach Eric Wolford walked into Chapin High School, Chapin football coach Justin Gentry didn’t get the sense that Hank Manos was going to land an offer from the Gamecocks. At least not that afternoon.
“We went up to the wrestling practice room. (Manos) had strep throat and was up there wrestling, and I had to leave, to go take my son,” Gentry said. “Within 15 minutes, (Wolford) said, ‘Coach, we’re going to offer him.’
“I think it was either that night or the next morning, I think, they offered him.”
It was the next morning. Manos, a 2018 center, stayed home from school that day.
“I like him a lot. He’s a very intense guy in practice, but a nice guy to talk to outside of it, which is perfect,” Manos said of Wolford.
Manos’ last visit to South Carolina was in February, to watch one of the team’s offseason workouts.
“The strength and conditioning coach up there is great. Coach Muschamp is great. They have a great staff top to bottom,” he said.
On Saturday, he’ll visit Duke. Last weekend, right after winning the South Carolina 4A heavyweight wrestling title, he visited N.C. State. The Wolfpack will host him again later this spring.
Manos (6-foot-4, 290 pounds) also plans to return to South Carolina within the next few weeks, though a date hasn’t been set.
N.C. State and Wake Forest are his other Power 5 offers. Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina and Georgia State have offered, too.
Gentry believes Manos will land a few more this spring. Along with Duke, Clemson and Vanderbilt are expressing interest. Mississippi State reached out on Wednesday. North Carolina wants him to visit for camp in the summer.
“Definitely, the main factors are education, proximity to home,” Manos said. “I kind of want to be close enough to where I can drive and don’t have to fly in and out. And coaches, I’m looking for a good coaching staff, a solid training staff (from) the ground up.”
More in-state notes
Three-star linebacker Channing Tindall continues to reel in offers, with North Carolina being the most recent. The 2018 prospect from Spring Valley High School in Columbia, S.C., visited this past Saturday for junior day.
Spring Valley coach Robin Bacon told Phil Kornblut that he believed the trip went well.
“I think he has a good relationship with the coaches at South Carolina,” Bacon said. “He really likes those guys. He likes (linebackers) coach (Coleman) Hutzler, (defensive coordinator) (Travaris) Robinson and coach Muschamp. I think his family feels comfortable with them.
“They run a very similar defense to what we run and he feels very comfortable with the system they run. He probably looks at T.J. Brunson and says, ‘Here’s a guy I competed against,’ and (he) got a lot of playing time as a freshman.”
