ROEBUCK, S.C. – To get the latest on one of the biggest remaining South Carolina recruiting targets, SEC Country caught up with coach Sam Greiner.
Greiner coaches Harding University High School (Charlotte), the newly minted North Carolina 4A state champion. His top offensive lineman, Jovaughn Gwyn, is a 6-foot-3, 290-pound guard with offers from South Carolina, North Carolina State and Duke.
Georgia Tech and Texas A&M are “trying to come in and make a statement,” but they might be too late to the party.
Greiner believes Gwyn is “firm to” choosing between South Carolina and N.C. State. That decision could be made in time for Gwyn to sign during the early signing period (Dec. 20-22).
“He wants to make an early decision,” Greiner said. “He doesn’t have to, but I think the colleges are starting to pressure him, so they know which way they can leave, if they need to go somewhere else, if they don’t get him. I think it’s one of those deals.
“I think he’s starting to feel the pressure of that, which is not a bad thing, but I think he’ll figure it out.”
Gwyn, who was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl, won’t play in the annual all-star game between North Carolina and South Carolina.
“He came down with strep throat on Sunday, but he’s really digging in deep, because of the new signing period, the early signing period, so he really wants to make a decision before the 20th,” Greiner said. “It just feels like a pressure – he needs to go one way or the other. The thing is, he just needed to take some time.”
North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren stopped by for a home visit over the weekend.
“We saw [south Carolina coach Will] Muschamp a week ago. They did a great job. I was with them on that visit, then Doeren came by as well,” Greiner said.
