The latest on 4-star QB Dakereon Joyner
March 14, 2017
Four-star quarterback Dakereon Joyner, the top 2018 quarterback from South Carolina, lists several schools that are still receiving consideration.
South Carolina, N.C. State, Georgia, Alabama and Oregon.
That’s what the country’s No. 8 ranked dual-threat quarterback said on Monday night, during an interview with Chris Kirschner, who covers Alabama recruiting for SEC Country.
Joyner discussed a variety of topics with Kirschner, including the players he would like to team up with in college.
“My boy Xavier Thomas out of IMG is originally from South Carolina,” Joyner said. “If I do commit to Alabama, we’ll see how it goes. I may have to convince him to come because I don’t want to play against him.
“Another one of my boys is Javon Kinlaw. That’s my boy. He is from the same city as me. We’re really cool.”
Kinlaw, a South Carolina signee, went to Goose Creek High School, near Charleston, S.C. Joyner attends Fort Dorchester High School, which is in North Charleston.
For a number of reasons, there’s a perception that Joyner will link up with Kinlaw at South Carolina.
“I’m an in-state guy. I can’t say what I exactly want to say on Twitter, but that’s what everyone thinks,” Joyner said. “If I do go out of state, then some people may be sad. I would love to get out of state, too — I’m not saying that I am — but I would love to get out and explore.”
Recently, Joyner visited South Carolina and N.C. State. He’ll visit Georgia in a couple of weeks and is hoping to set something up with Oregon.
The Gamecocks hosted him earlier this month for spring practice.
“I got offered by South Carolina my eighth grade year. I know that place in-and-out. It’s only like an hour away from my home,” Joyner said. “I watched practice for the first time, and it excited me. I got to sit in meetings with (quarterbacks) coach (Kurt) Roper and watched their QBs throw and learn about their depth at QB.”
Three of the schools on his list started freshmen quarterbacks in 2016: Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.
For Joyner, that’s not really an issue.
“I can always redshirt my freshman year. If they are good enough as they are now, then they would probably leave after three years,” he said, “So I could redshirt my freshman year and be fine.”
Joyner added, “My expectation is to go wherever and win that job. If they have a great year, then so be it. That’s their job to do that. But I’m going anywhere to win that job.”
