The lesson Peyton Manning taught Jake Bentley this summer

August 28, 2019

Jake Bentley only has one more season to show what he can do in college. It’s not a stretch to say his professional future relies on having a good senior season in Columbia. While Bentley will undoubtedly get a look from the NFL once his career as a Gamecock comes to an end, the final and likely most important evaluation of his skills will be cemented in the minds of NFL scouts by his performance this fall. Bentley is wisely soaking up all the knowledge he can before he even has a chance to think about his life as a potential NFL player.

One of the biggest lessons the South Carolina signal-caller plans to take with him into his senior season came from arguably the best quarterback in the history of the Southeastern Conference.

“I try to get as much information as I can. And you know, I learned a lot from the Manning Passing Academy,” Bentley said Wednesday during an appearance on the Paul Finebaum Show. “One thing I learned from Peyton is that he never wanted to go into a game and something happened where he felt like he didn’t have all the information he needed or the game ended and he, and he thought, you know, he didn’t watch film on that specific coverage or blitz. So, I took that same mindset and really just want to, you know, watch as much as I can and get as much information as I can get ready to go.”

The stories of Manning’s days on Rocky Top are legendary when it comes to film review. The former Tennessee signal-caller was known to have spent so much time in the Volunteer film room that the program’s staff started giving Manning tapes to review on his own — so they could lock up the facility and go home.

That’s a lesson Bentley appears to have taken to heart and one that could result in the best season of his Gamecock career come this fall.

Sadly he won't have but so much film to help this Saturday. I really hope he has the other things fixed. It would be great to have a gamecock QB have a huge season and actually go on to see a lot of action in the NFL like some of our other players have done.

Unfortunately, ain't gonna happen. Still making freshman mistakes.
