As I look it, there is one thing that’s holding our program back: a true QB.
For me, the biggest issue is the QB situation. SOS is greatly limited in his ability to call plays when he’s limited by his QB’s ability. Teams have NO concern of us throwing the ball down field. None whatsoever. Shaw, for all his strengths, is simply not a true QB. We will not and cannot move to the next level until we get a bona fide QB in here. Connor Mitch who is coming in next year could be the answer as he his highly rated and a pro-style QB (the kind of QB Spurrier actually likes to coach). For all the wonderful things SOS has done in making our program relevant nationally, somehow he has failed to recruit a really good QB. It simply doesn’t make sense and I don’t know if there’s an explanation. In fact, most of the QBs he has recruited here have been busts for one reason or another. That’s a surprise to everyone. To date, Shaw is the one exception, but even his QB abilities are clearly limited. He’s a run first, second and third and throw if you absolutely have to QB. Somewhat confusing to me is why SOS has recruited so many dual-threat QBs when everyone knows he greatly prefers pro-style, drop back passers. Even Mitch isn’t super highly rated (17th ranked QB prospect), but he is considered the best QB prospect Spurrier has recruited here.
We NEED a very good QB and until we get one we have reached our peak. I expect a wide-open QB competition next year between Shaw, Nosovitch and Mitch
