The man who could fill the shoes of Silva

Oct. 05, 2019

Chris Silva not only led South Carolina in blocked shots each of the last three seasons, he did it without serious competition. He had 36 more swats than any Gamecock last year, 28 more than his closest competitor the year before and 21 more than any one in 2016-17. “A one-man blocking crew,” said Gamecock coach Frank Martin. It would be impressive if Wildens replaces SIlva in most of Silva's statistical areas of contribution. IMO, the most important areas would simply be rebounding and rim protection (shot-blocking). With the addition of Wildens, McCreary and transfer Henry to returners Kotsar and Frink, it looks like the depth of such players has improved substantially. But we'll need to see it take hold once the season begins, in actual games. The biggest additions to our team will be improved guard play at the point, and improved rebounding. Hopefully we get both this season.....

I would be happier if we played better as a team and didn't have to rely on a single player like Silva because SEC teams will take away a single player like Silva.

I believe it will happen this season.

I'm really excited for this year's team. Frank has said this is the most athletic bunch he has coached and we all know we have definitely lacked in that regard the past few seasons. If they can learn to play together quickly then this could be a fun team to watch.

I don't think one player will be able to replace Silva's production. It's going to have to be a group effort amongst all the bugs. From the little amount of game film I've seen on the newcomers, Leveque's game and build resembles Silva. I just don't know if he's ready to come in and be a big contributor from day 1.
