The next possible Gamecocks commitment

Potential Gamecocks commitments

Welcome to early April.

It’s that time of year on the recruiting calendar when there’s not much going on, especially when there’s a quarterback already on board.

The evaluation period doesn’t begin until Friday. Plus, South Carolina appears to be encouraging early official visitors to see the campus during the first weekend in June. But that doesn’t mean a commitment can’t happen at some point during the next three weeks.

Which prospects could be next to join South Carolina’s eighth-ranked recruiting class? SEC Country examines some of the possibilities, though not all are expected to make decisions before the start of May:

  • 3-star linebacker Derek Boykins (Concord, N.C.): A decision is expected in the summer before his senior season. He’s originally from South Carolina and grew up rooting for the Gamecocks, but Clemson is knocking on the door.
  • 3-star running back Mikey Dukes (Charleston, S.C.): Because he’s also a basketball prospect, Dukes may not be ready to make a decision until mid-to-late summer. Oregon, his “dream school,” just offered. Clemson would hold the cards with an offer.
  • 4-star defensive end Curtis Fann Jr. (Twin City, Ga.): It’s no secret that Fann likes the Gamecocks, but it’s not clear how long he wants to continue as an uncommitted prospect.
  • 3-star tight end Tyler Fromm (Warner Robins, Ga.): Auburn is also in the mix. However, there’s no specific timeline for a decision. He knows the Gamecocks have one tight end spot left. If there’s an offer, Georgia would likely be the winner.
  • 4-star safety Jaylen McCollough (Powder Springs, Ga.): Over the last few days, there’s been plenty of chatter about a possible commitment from McCollough, who visited for the spring game. He and Fann have discussed the possibility of linking up at South Carolina.
  • Don’t be too surprised if there’s a lull before the Gamecocks’ next run of commitments, in part because several potential additions to the class are holding out on decisions until later this fall, including 4-star tackle Warren McClendon (Brunswick, Ga.) and 4-star cornerback Jammie Robinson (Cordele, Ga.).
Others, such 5-star defensive end Zacch Pickens (Anderson, S.C.) and 4-star defensive end Joseph Anderson (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), have uncertain timelines.
