About 5 years ago I remember reading a long-form article in SI or ESPN about coaching searches and the art of the HC interview. It was FASCINATING. The case study was Doug Pederson, who months before had been hired as the new HC of my beloved Philadelphia Eagles, replacing Andy Reid (and of course both have since won Super Bowls). But the takeaway was that every HC interview involves the candidate coming into the interview with this mythical piece of interview paraphernalia - THE NOTEBOOK. The notebook is a huge three-ring binder that contains that candidate's plan, in detail, about how they were going to turn around the franchise/team, down to the most minute things. The gist of the story was that Pederson, who was a long-shot candidate when he interviewed, absolutely blew the owner and GM away with his notebook. It took his candidacy from "let's bring him in and see what he has to say" to "how can we let this guy leave? Because if we don't hire him someone else will."
So who brings the best notebook in to Ray? Is that what has already kept Beamer in the mix? Will someone emerge from the pack with the best plan? I guess my point in all this is to say that there are things going on inside a search that we will never be privy to, like the strength or weakness of a notebook, or the interpersonal skills of the coach during the interview.
