The signees South Carolina fans should not forget
Feb. 01, 2017
Recruits who don’t look back after making a commitment tend to get overlooked now. South Carolina has a few who fit that bill.
Look no further than three wide receivers, all of whom will help upgrade the overall talent at the position.
For one second, just imagine if OrTre Smith and Shi Smith opted to prolong their respective recruitments and waited to commit to South Carolina. Gamecocks fans would go nuts if the top two recruits from the state revealed a #SpursUp in late January or on National Signing Day.
When you toss in Chad Terrell, that makes for three wide receiver signees rated as 4-star prospects, according to Rivals. That’s quite a haul for offensive coordinator Kurt Roper and co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon. And, yes, quarterback Jake Bentley, too.
There was not one bit of drama from any of them after their commitments were made. Shi was first, giving a verbal in June. Three months later, it was OrTre’s turn. Terrell popped in early November.
In January, OrTre was among the midyear enrollees to arrive at South Carolina. The fans who were at Colonial Life Arena for the Ole Miss game certainly acted like they hadn’t forgotten. He received a thunderous ovation when introduced at halftime.
But, let’s be real, the guy spurned an offer from Clemson — nobody around Columbia is forgetting about him anytime soon. And he’ll certainly have an opportunity to make an early impact on the field.
With the lack of returning depth and established playmakers not named Deebo Samuel or Bryan Edwards, so will Shi and Terrell.
Somewhere around Columbia on Wednesday, Bentley is sporting a big, ol’ smile because help is on the way. The Gamecocks wide receiver corps just got better.
