The Texas A&M game visitor list, more on the former Alabama commitment
Sept. 26, 2016
South Carolina will host 3-star DE Matthew Butler for an unofficial visit this weekend for the Texas A&M game.
Butler, who’s from Garner (N.C.) High School, was last on campus in July for the cookout.
“Both South Carolina and Tennessee have really solidified themselves as schools that are high up for me, as well as NC State and Duke, who are up there as well,” he said after the visit.
This fall, Butler has visited Duke and Penn State.
Saturday will be his third trip to South Carolina. He joins 2018 TE Zach Sheffer on SEC Country’s confirmed visitor list.
The No. 27 ranked strong-side defensive end in the class of 2017 would be used in avariety of ways at South Carolina.
Byrnes LB sees South Carolina, Rocky Top
Khalid Jones has been to three games this season. First, was the Battle at Bristol. A week later, he was in Columbia for South Carolina’s game against ECU. This past weekend, Tennessee hosted him for the Florida game.
The 6-foot-1, 255-pound 2018 linebacker from Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C. enjoyed the jaunt down to Columbia.
“The South Carolina trip, it was good. They played a really good game. Sandstorm is always super intense,” Jones said.
The No. 7 ranked inside linebacker in the country also weighed in on the Tennessee games he saw.
“It was insane,” he said of the Bristol trip. “To see 150,000 fans there just to watch a game — it was just crazy talking to all the fans and being a part of that experience. It was great. It was one of the best football experiences I’ve had.”
As for this past weekend’s trip, that also went well.
“Just to see how the crowd lifts the team and how much influence they have on the game when they’re playing a game in Neyland, it was great, too,” Jones said.
Tennessee, Duke and Wake Forest have offered. South Carolina isn’t ready to make a move yet.
“They’re just waiting to see my film at the end of this year and then they’ll evaluate that,” Jones said. “They’re just going to evaluate my season, mostly because I moved from a smaller school, a 1A school to a 5A school.
“They want to see how I do with the transition. They want to evaluate my season this year, before they offer.”

Last week, former Alabama commitment Aaron Sterling spoke with SEC Country reporter Chris Kirschner.
A few of thoughts from the 3-star defensive lineman from Tucker (Ga.) High School were shared in this very space.

- “I just know for sure after having a family discussion that Alabama is not going to be the place for me. The main talking points were if I fit the scheme, how well I relate to the coaches and if I’d go to that school if it wasn’t for football. After thinking about it, I couldn’t go to Alabama without football.
- “(Georgia interest) picked up … I actually just talked to coach (Kirby) Smart last week. Coach (Tracy) Rocker just hit me up (last Wednesday). I’m pretty sure he’s happy now that I de-committed. They keep on telling me that they need me there because they need pass rushers, fast-twitch guys who can rush the edge.”
- “It was a two-week process of thinking about de-committing. I was thinking about it hard for a good two weeks. I just happened to come to my conclusion right after the (N.C. State) trip.”
