We were 6-0 and feeling great after a huge win over UGA. We had visions of Miami Beach. We wanted a perfect season. Yet we faced back to back road games in two of the top venues in America against 2 of the top 5 teams in the country.
We had deficiencies we didn't want to admit we had:
1) Poor special teams play. Poor kick coverage. No proven FG kicker and punter.
2) A young, inexperienced offensive line. These guys will be very good in time, but LT and LG are sophs and RT is a frosh.
3) the injury bug hit us HARD. VERY HARD.
4) Connor Shaw is not Colt McCoy. Not yet any way. He has yet to play a good game on the road. Has he reached his ceiling? I don't know.
5) SOS is still SOS. He will pull the QB whenever he wants to.
6) We miss Alshon. No big WR that can be a go-to guy. Jr.'s insistence on playing DL Moore is mind boggling.
Now- most importantly. We still have a lot to play for:
11 wins still possible
Undefeated home season
4 straight over Clemson
3 straight over Tennessee
Finally have a great shot to beat Ark.
SOS becomes all time winningest SC coach this season.
I said before the season that with all the question marks and staff turnover, 9-3 would be an excellent year. We could still go 10-2. I just hoped we could find a way to get to 10 wins, even if the 10th came in a bowl.
Good news, Outback and Capital One opponent will be against a slow, mediocre Big 12 team.
Fans, please come out to the game Saturday. My wife and I are making the trip in from Texas. we were supposed to be traveling to Georgia to adopt our son, but the adoption fell through, so we are coming on over to cheer on the Gamecocks.
How will this team face adversity? We find out starting Saturday. But don't give up on this team. We are a good team. Not a great team, but a team with an outstanding defense, an improving kicker in Yates and an offense that has to get on track. Special teams have to improve.
It will be an interesting week at the Proving Grounds for sure.
Ripping the team and coaches accomplishes nothing. We are on the brink of another top 10 recruiting class and a 10 win season.
things are never as good as they seem when things are going good and things are never as bad as they seem when things are NOT going well. The truth is somewhere in between.
Go Fightin' Damn Gamecocks!
