Things South Carolina fans need to know on National Signing Day

February 06, 2018

The first Wednesday in February has lost some of its luster, but that shouldn’t take away the shine from the 2018 South Carolina recruiting class.

During the December signing period, Will Muschamp signed 20 players to his third class of Gamecocks. National Signing Day will see him add as many as four.

SEC Country will monitor what transpires with South Carolina throughout the day on Wednesday, but there won’t be as much opportunity for action, at least not like previous years when there was just one signing period.

Signing Day kicks off with eyes pointed towards Irmo, S.C., specifically at Dutch Fork High School, which is home to 4-star athlete Bryce Thompson.

The timeline for reveals

Thompson, who remains committed to the Gamecocks, planned to sign on Wednesday morning in the 8 a.m. ET hour, but that’s no longer the case. That doesn’t mean he won’t end up in this class at some point.

However, if Thompson signs with another four-year school like Marshall, all bets are off. But he doesn’t have to sign with anyone on Wednesday.

Don’t be surprised if Thompson ends up taking the junior college route to South Carolina. If that’s the case, look for it to be one of the schools in Mississippi, according to an SEC Country source at the JUCO level.

Three-star defensive end John Mincey (Homerville, Ga.) is expected to make his decision known around 10 a.m. South Carolina and Tennessee are the finalists. Ole Miss tried to squeeze in a final official visit last weekend, though that never transpired. In fact, Mincey was originally scheduled to see Florida State that weekend.

Four-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge (Concord, N.C.) will reveal his choice at 2:30 p.m. Georgia and North Carolina are listed as the finalists with South Carolina, but this is more of an SEC East battle.

Both defensive linemen are predicted to sign with the Gamecocks.

Committed and signing

Four-star tackle Dylan Wonnum committed to South Carolina on Saturday over Auburn, Tennessee and, to a lesser degree, LSU.

While it’s not certain what time he’ll fax over his national letter of intent, we do know that he will sign with the Gamecocks.

Tucker (Ga.) High School teammate Josh Vann is the only member of South Carolina’s class ranked higher than Wonnum in the national standings, according to the 247Sports composite.

Vann is 146 and Wonnum is 178. If Sandidge joins the class, he’ll jump Vann for the top spot (141).
