Third Gamecock baseball player enters transfer portal

May 30, 2019

Another South Carolina baseball player is leaving the program — shortstop Nick Neville has entered the transfer portal, a team spokesperson confirmed Thursday.

Neville, a junior college transfer who spent a season at Notre Dame and a season at San Jacinto College before joining South Carolina, started 19 games for the Gamecocks this season, primarily at the beginning of the year. He hit .127 with three RBIs in 63 at-bats, but struck out 27 times. He was eventually displaced from the lineup by junior George Callil. (READ MORE)

It's very unfortunate, but Neville was brought in to bring immediate experience and maturity to the lineup as a JUCO, and he really turned out seemingly to be totally overwhelmed by baseball in the SEC. He struggled mightily at even getting the bat on the ball, and making contact and putting the ball into play. He really brought very little to the table: whether that was due to the coaching he got, or the preparation he took for the season, I don't know. We had a number of new players that struggled to get hits this past season. Perhaps some changes in how we coach hitting, I dunno. Something has to change, however....
