Three-star defensive end Jordan Smith (Lithonia, Ga./Lithonia) is one of several players from the Peach State who will be on campus on Saturday for Junior Day. The 6-foot-5, 217-pounder holds an offer from the Gamecocks but claims to be wide open in the recruiting process.
The good news for South Carolina is that they were in on him early, which made a positive impression.
“I think South Carolina has been on me since the process has started,” Smith said. “They were one of my first offers and they’ve been recruiting me for a long time now. Since they were one of the first, it means a lot. It’s a big-time school in the SEC, so it means a lot.”
Co-defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward has been a fixture at the school for several years and plucked defensive ends David Johnson and Cedrick Cooper from the school in the past.
Smith called Ward a “real good guy and good person.”
“I think it’s an opportunity I could go play early,” Smith said. “David Johnson plays defensive end now and I think there will be a good opportunity to play. He tells me great things about South Carolina.”
Smith visited last season for the Tennessee football game but he wants to get an up-close look at how the staff interacts with the players while on the practice field.
He also wants to meet with defensive line coach Deke Adams and begin to form that relationship.
“I’m just looking forward to seeing the scrimmage game and getting to meet some of the players and the coaching staff,” Smith said. “Building a relationship with the coach is one way for me to find out what school I want to go to.”
Smith said that he’s taking the recruiting process slowly and didn’t want to name any schools that are standing out. He doesn’t have a time frame to release a list of leaders but did note that he was going to take all of his official visits
