Three-star offensive lineman Trey Derouen 6'4" 325lbs (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) makes five. Derouen announced his commitment to South Carolina on his Twitter account on Thursday night giving the Gamecocks five offensive line commitments in the 2015 recruiting class.

Derouen, a former Mississippi State commitment, picked up offers from Louisville, Florida, Boston College, Duke and others late in the process. He visited Louisville and South Carolina during the month of January then hosted coaches from both schools in his home this week before making is decision.

After having Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham by on Wednesday night, Derouen decided to go in another direction.

“It was pretty awesome, what stood out was how they treated us,” Derouen said after his official visit to South Carolina. “What was coming with facilities, Coach Elliott and all the offensive line commits, well really all the commits, they seemed like a family.”

The Gamecocks have an entire offensive line committed in the 2015 class. Wake Forest transfer Cory Helms has told the Gamecocks he’s coming. Derouen, who projects as a guard, could play the opposite side as Zack Bailey (Summerville/Summerville). Christian Pellage (Brooksville, Fla./Nature Coast) and Blake Camper (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) are the tackles.

With Derouen’s pledge, South Carolina now has 30 players a part of the 2015 recruiting class.

Notes

Three-star offensive lineman Trey Derouen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) committed to South Carolina on Thursday night and became the fifth OL in the class, which was obviously a big need.

Derouen was committed to Mississippi State but the Bulldogs asked him to grayshirt. Derouen didn’t like the idea and opened up his recruitment. South Carolina was one of the first schools into see him as Shawn Elliott went by in mid December and established an early rapport. Other major schools came in much later in the process. Recruiter G.A. Mangus certainly deserves a tip of the cap here, too, as the recruiter of record.

Derouen told head coach Steve Spurrier while on his official visit that he was committing. He basically gave a silent commitment and also reaffirmed that on Monday when the South Carolina coaches went in to see him. What gave me pause was that there was word out of Louisville following his official visit the week before that he gave a silent commitment there, too.

Mangus was able to get Derouen to shut the process down though and he canceled his previously scheduled visits to Kansas State and Florida.

He was told in the recruiting process that he would get a look at both tackle and guard. Derouen is almost certainly a guard long-term though. He’s 6-foot-3 and 325 pounds, which screams guard.
