First trip to South Carolina for D-line prospect
Conway (S.C.) High School defensive lineman Tonka Hemingway, a 2020 prospect who already has several offers, visited South Carolina earlier this month for the Kentucky game. It was his first trip to Williams-Brice Stadium to see the Gamecocks play.
“It went good. I liked the atmosphere,” he said.
While in Columbia, the 6-foot-2, 250-pound prospect met with Muschamp and defensive line coach Lance Thompson.
“He’s just glad that we were up there to visit,” Hemingway said of Muschamp.
Hemingway added, “Same thing. [Thompson] was excited.”
South Carolina’s coaches saw him during the summer, when Hemingway visited for camp.
“I like [Muschamp’s] coaching and how he gets along with his players,” Hemingway said.
He added, “It was good. I like the way [Thompson] worked at the camp.”
Georgia, the only other school he’s visited so far, also had him in camp this summer. In addition to South Carolina, Clemson, Georgia State, Maryland and North Carolina have offered Hemingway.
For Hemingway, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 31 overall prospect in the Class of 2020, several factors will be weighed in his decision.
“My education and the people around me, the campus,” he said.
South Carolina recruiting weekend
With an eye on maximizing the opportunity to host recruits, it doesn’t get much better than a 4 o’clock kick time. That’s when South Carolina and Arkansas will tee it up on Oct. 7, when the Gamecocks return to Williams-Brice, following their trip to College Station, Texas, this weekend.
Four-star linebacker Dax Hollifield recently reached out to area recruiter Bobby Bentley to let him know that’s the weekend he wants to use his official visit to South Carolina. Hollifield took his first official visit to Florida State this past weekend.
Florida State commitment Israel Mukuamu is scheduled to make his official visit to South Carolina that same weekend. The 3-star safety went to Indiana this past weekend.
A handful of unofficial visitors from the 2019 class are expected to be on the guest list, including 4-star offensive tackle Warren McClendon and 4-star defensive end Ani Izuchukwu.
More names will be added over the next 7-10 days, but the Arkansas game is already shaping up to be a big-time recruiting event for Muschamp & Co.
