South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus' connections in the northeast have paid off for the Gamecocks in recent classes and he'll look to continue the pipeline in 2015
One prospect Mangus already has his eye on is class of 2015 four-star offensive tackle Ryan Bates 6'6" 280lbs (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood). So far Bates holds offers from Georgia Tech, Penn State, Temple, Virginia, and South Carolina. He landed his offer from USC on May 23 and it did not take long for the four-star prospect to schedule a visit to Columbia.
“It was exciting knowing that they are in the SEC and I have my first SEC offer,” Bates said of receiving a scholarship offer from South Carolina. “I am planning on getting down there real soon. On July 7th I will be visiting Virginia then will head down to South Carolina on the 8th I believe.”
While Bates was thrilled to land his first offer from an SEC school, the Pennsylvania product admitted that he does not know much about the South Carolina program outside of a few conversations with his recruiter, Mangus. However, Bates hopes that will change soon.
“G.A. is a good guy I like him a lot. He is a great guy to talk to; he has a good sense of humor. It’s always fun when you get a chance to have a conversation with him,” said Bates, who helped lead his Archbishop Wood team to the state finals this past year. “I’ve heard good things about South Carolina. I know it’s in the SEC, the SEC is the best football conference around. Other than that though I don’t know a whole lot about South Carolina to be honest with you. I’m hoping I’ll learn a lot on my visit and have some good things to say when I get back.”
Although a decision is likely a long time away for the rising high school junior, Bates already has a good idea of what he will be looking for in a school.
“The campus life will be important, but the most important thing will be the academics and the programs offered," he said. "After that just how the coaches and I fit in with each other.”
