The college football season is upon us...Sort of.
With a vast majority of Top 25 teams playing inferior opponents, we don't know much more about the validity of the ranks than we did last week.
With the exception of Alabama, most teams either under-performed or weren't tested in the least.
1. So Cal - 49-10 win over an inferior Hawaii. I'd like to say we'll know more about them next week but we won't. Syracuse is next up for the Trojans.
2. Alabama - 41-14 It was never even close. Bama destroyed a top 10 Michigan team and should hop over So Cal but some people just love the Trojans.
3. LSU - 41-14 over North Texas isn't terribly impressive. Combine that with the fact their QB got rocked by the Mean Green D. LSU Washington next.
4. Oklahoma - 24-7 vs UTEP. Again not a top 25 performance, let alone a top 5. I would like to say that they will get a true test next week but they lock up with Florida A&M. Another 24-7 win and they'll start falling.
5. Oregon - 57-34 vs Arkansas St. Offensively this was what you expected to see a top 5 team do against an inferior opponent. The Ducks jumped out to a 29-0 first quarter lead and Ark. St. never had a chance.
6. UGA - 45-23 against Buffalo. I think some teams forgot who they were this weekend, UGA being one of them. YOU'RE IN THE SEC!!! WIN!!! UGA let Buffalo stay close far to long. We'll have a better idea who the Bulldogs really are after they open conference play in week 2 with USC. I mean Mizzou, old habit.
7. FSU - 69-3 vs Murray St. Exactly what you should see in week 1. Unfortunately, it will be exactly what we see in week 2 as FSU faces off against Savannah St.
8. Michigan 14-41 Loss to, in my opinion, the nation's best. Their QB was abused repeatedly. He was hit often and hard. That wasn't a Big 10 defense he faced last night. He doesn't have to worry about getting hit like that next week vs Air Force.
9. USC 17-13 over Vandy. Anytime you can go on the road and pick up a win in the SEC you are doing something. We should see USC pick it up over the next 2 weeks with ECU and UAB before resuming conference play with Mizzou in week 4.
10. Arkansas 49-24 over Jacksonville St. Another team playing a much weaker team and not being quite as impressive as you would like. You have to be concerned with the points some of these guys are giving up to inferior teams.
11. West Virginia 69-34 over Marshall. That's 139 points in the last 8 quarters of football. Gino Smith, who some like as this season's Heisman winner, was 32-36 for 323 and 4 TDs. Look for the same numbers next week as they face James Madison.
12. Wisconsin 26-21 over NIU. Again not what you expect from a ranked team but it's week 1. They'll have to do better if they want to beat Oregon State next week.
13. Michigan St. 17-13 over a "ranked" Boise St team. Sort of reminded me of the USC/Vandy game. Bell carried the Spartans to a win. State should have an easier time next week vs. Central Michigan.
14. Clemson 26-19 over Auburn. As good a win as you'll see an ACC team get during the regular season. This isn't Cam Newton's Auburn but they are still an SEC team. Any win vs an SEC opponent is a good win. Another game that reminded me of USC/Vandy in that, by preseason rank, the winning team should have won easily. Clemson offense was impressive even without Sammy Potkins. Ball St next week should let the Tigers rack up even more yardage.
15. Texas 37-17 over Wyoming. Again, the margin of victory was not equal to the discrepancy in talent. UT has New Mexico next week.
16. Va Tech has Georgia Tech Monday night. Big game as one of these teams will likely be representing the Coastal division in the ACC championship. After this game Va Tech has Austin Peay. The Hokies shouldn't be looking ahead.
17. Nebraska 49-20 vs Southern Miss. This one was more of that you expect. Southern Miss isn't horrible but Nebraska won just as they should. The Huskers have UCLA next week. The Bruins looked good in week 1.
18. Ohio St. 56-10 over Miami of Ohio. Again, this is what you expect when these 2 teams face off. Buckeyes have UCF next week.
19. OK St. 84-0 over Savannah St. Yea the same Savannah St that will be facing FSU next week . OK St has Arizona next week . That's the same Arizona that needed OT to beat Toledo.
20. TCU off this week. They'll face Grambling St next week to open their season.
21. Stanford 20-17 over San Jose St. I usually feel that in week 1, if you win, your rank shouldn't be hurt. I mean, it's week 1. You're not going to be in midseason form. BUT, Stanford doesn't have Luck. His replacement was 16-26 for 125. They should, probably won't but should, fall in the polls. I wouldn't be against them falling out of the top 25. They have Duke next week.
22. Kansas St. 51-9 over Missouri St. When the polls came out I saw KSU and my immediate reaction was "K St. WTF!?!?" With that said, they won like a ranked team should. We'll know a little more about them after the play Miami next week.
23. Florida 27-14 vs Bowling Green. I was as unimpressed with UF as I was with any other team this weekend. I honestly don't know how they get ranked in the top 25 when nobody knew who the QB was going to be. I do NOT see them beating Texas A&M next weekend.
24. Boise St. 13-17 loss to Michigan St. I didn't think they were deserving of this ranking due to the players they were replacing this year. And it looks like they'll only have it for one week. Boise St has a good opportunity for a bounce back game with Miami of Ohio next week.
25. Louisville vs UK later today. Louisville was in the same WTF boat as K St. I think it will take a big win vs UK to keep them in the top 25 considering how well the teams just outside of the top 25 performed. Louisville has Missouri St next week.
I don't expect a whole lot of movement after week 1. I do expect Boise St and Louisville to be replace by Notre Dame and Tennessee. Depending on the response people have to Florida's and Stanford's wins I could see them potentially falling out. Especially in Georgia Tech beats Virginia Tech.
I'm bored and it's 5 a.m. So I thought I would share my week 1 opinions.
Thanks for listening!!!
