Top defensive end, walk-on kicker prospect visit

Charlotte, N.C., to start listing top schools and naming favorites.

“Of course, I do like South Carolina, but as far as a favorite or top on the list, no favorites right now, no list really created,” he said.

The Gamecocks have hosted Cowan for several visits over the last 10 months, starting in April, when he added their offer to his list of suitors. Cowan returned to campus in the summer for a 7-on-7 tournament and again in the fall for a game.

On Saturday, he was back at South Carolina for another junior day event.

“It was really good. Just basically getting back to South Carolina, I hadn’t been there since the Florida game, so it was really good getting back and see things and meet coaches,” Cowan said. “It was just the usual for a visit.”

This stop included some 1-on-1 time with Muschamp, so they spoke for “for a good, little minute.”

“It was really good. We just talked, really, about things off the field, other than football,” Cowan said. “I just got a good chance to feel him out and this wasn’t my first time talking to him, so I’m looking forward to building a relationship with him down the road.”

Running backs coach Bobby Bentley has served as the area recruiter for Cowan, who attends Providence Day School with fellow 2020 prospect Porter Rooks, a 4-star wide receiver who also visited South Carolina this month.

Cowan also caught up with defensive line coach Lance Thompson.

“He’s been a great guy in his coaching career. I’ve heard from players that he’s a wonderful coach and knows how to coach defensive linemen, coach them well,” Cowan said. “Really, my relationship with [Thompson] is great. We talk on a normal basis and I feel like that’s a coach that I can really go to and talk to about anything.”

According to 247Sports, Cowan is the No. 7 overall prospect in the Class of 2020. Among strongside defensive ends, he’s No. 2.

Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State and Virginia Tech are among the early offers for Cowan.
