Top in-state sophomore Zacch Pickens loves South Carolina

Four-star defensive end Zacch Pickens isn’t halfway through high school and he has a flock of college offers, including one from South Carolina.
Florida State was first. The Seminoles pulled the trigger in November of 2015 when Jimbo Fisher saw Pickens on the sideline before their game at Clemson. Pickens was a freshman at the time. The Gamecocks followed three months later, one day ahead of in-state rival Clemson.
Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee, Penn State and Virginia Tech have since made offers to Pickens, a 6-foot-3, 244-pound prospect who is finishing his sophomore year at T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, S.C.
South Carolina made a favorable impression on Pickens, who is the top-ranked in-state prospect in the 2019 recruiting class.
“It’s really nice to get recruited by South Carolina,” Pickens said. “It’s real nice. I love all of them.”
The Gamecocks last had him on campus for a game in November.
“It’s been a little while since I’ve been up there, but I’m going to try to make it soon,” Pickens said.
South Carolina coach Will Muschamp and defensive line coach Lance Thompson are both in communication with Pickens, who is the No. 16 overall prospect in the class of 2019 in the 247Sports composition rankings.
“He’s a real nice guy. Every time I see [Muschamp], he always makes me smile and I laugh,” Pickens said.
It’s a similar story with Thompson.
“He’s a really nice guy. We always joke and play around,” Pickens said.
Pickens is the No. 4 strong-side defensive end in the country in the 2019 recruiting class, and he is in no rush to make a decision. That, he said, is still more than a year away. He first must play his junior year of high school.
“Definitely my senior year, that’s when I’m going to start telling everybody where I want to go,” Pickens said
