Family affair
Four-star Warren McClendon, who’s listed by 247Sports as the No. 3-ranked offensive tackle in the Class of 2019, visited South Carolina on Saturday for the 24-21 win over Tennessee.
“It was crazy,” he said. “I’ve been to a Georgia game and I would say South Carolina’s got them beat.”
While in for the game, the 6-foot-4, 270-pound prospect from Brunswick (Ga.) High School spent plenty of time with his cousin, Gamecocks co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon.
“It’s a factor,” the younger McClendon said of the family connection. “It’s a big factor.”
South Carolina wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon has an inside track on 4-star OT Warren McClendon.
The cousins were “mostly just catching up” on Saturday.
“But from time to time,” McClendon said, “He’ll (say), if I commit there, I’ll always have family.”
Offensive line coach Shawn Elliott also met with the No. 25 overall prospect in the Class of 2019.
“I really like coach Elliott and the way he pushes his players and expects great (things) from them,” McClendon said.
Top RB returns to Williams-Brice
Four-star Jamal Elliott, the No. 9-ranked running back in the Class of 2018, visited South Carolina earlier this year for the spring game.
On Saturday, he returned for the Tennessee game.
“It was a great visit,” Elliott said. “That was my first time going to a big game like that. I think the fan base and all that stuff was incredible.”
He added, “I just felt like the atmosphere, it was electrifying. They have true fans. … I’ve never been in an atmosphere that loud and a lot of people. It was a great experience.”
Before the game started, Elliott caught up with his recruiter of record, running backs coach Bobby Bentley.
“He was just happy for me to be there,” Elliott said. “Coach Bentley, really, we text every other day. He was just keeping track of me.”
Elliott, who began the season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., has returned to his home at Hillside High School in Durham, N.C.
Since returning to Hillside, he’s racked up 566 yards on the ground and scored 11 total touchdowns.
“I like the way (South Carolina) used their running backs. I felt like I could fit perfect. I see some changes to the offense. I just like the way they use their running backs,” Elliott said. “I guess some people are forgetting about South Carolina, but to me, that’s really a running back university.
“They had talented running backs like Marcus Lattimore. I think that’s really a running back university.”
