This is a bit abstract and I have no metrics to support it ... but IMO the scramble for "top" candidates is more about impressing boosters and the fan base than it is about a lack of qualified candidates. How many teams have entered into bidding wars for some of these folks because they feared that hiring a guy from Western Kentucky would be a PR flop - regardless of how good he is at his job? I would say often the idea that there are only a handful of guys out there who could be successful as our DC - the Mason/Arnett group for example - is to me more about splash and less about X's and O's.  And I trust that our head coach can make a qualified evaluation of best candidates and choose wisely. And I appreciate that he is willing to hire people who fit rather than who make a splash.

Good post. Fit and philosophy are more important than name recognition.

I am not sold on getting former Head Coaches as coordinators - especially when you have a young HC. The former Head Coaches will not be motivated because they are in a lesser position, and they will be tempted to second guess the less experienced HC. Not good for staff chemistry.
I never thought of that but it makes sense. I would say the one exception might be somebody like Bud Foster who obviously is a family confidante.

Yeah, but I do not think Bud was ever a HC. I would like to see him come in as an Ellis Johnson-like consultant to help his former boss' son start a new dynasty.
Very true. And of course Satterfield was a HC but not at a Power 5 school.

After watching Beamer's hires it seem evident that there is a strategy for him.   He is hiring people that he knows and trust, but also guys that he feels will stay for more than a year allowing him build continuity with his staff for several years.  He is not hiring the latest SEC Mercenary that comes in for a year and then jumps to the next best thing the following year.  The number of coaches on the move every year for the same position in the SEC is crazy and I think he realizes that USC is not a destination type job for most of those types.   I am not saying this is going to work, but it is a refreshing approach and I hope that we build continuity with our staff and ultimately recruiting.  He is mixing in enough of the former players to get that passion on the staff as well and I like that.  I also think it gives us a little bit of advantage in that teams may not know exactly what to expect from us.  With the SEC re-treads all of the other coaches already know their tendencies and have a pretty thick book on them.

+1

Especially here at SC where we are not loaded with talent.  Alabama can lose coaches on a regular basis and still win because of their recruiting.  Not saying it does not hurt Bama at all to lose coaches, but their program can withstand it much easier than a SC.  I would much rather see Beamer make hires like this - people he trusts, want to be here and hopefully stay here for years so you build continuity.

Well, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.  That's what our personnel has felt like.  This approach,  from Shane, down, is different.  I'm hopeful.  At least it's new and exciting.  I was bored with football under WM. Ready to be excited again!!

Leave it to Longhaul to pick up on the fact that these coaches are in it for the long haul. ;)

Agree, watching us play football under Muschamp was the sports equivalent of a root canal.
