Traevon Kenion 6'4" 212lbs is classified as a 4-star wide receiver, but he’s committed to the 2019 South Carolina recruiting class as a tight end.
The Gamecocks added his commitment on Sunday in this video.
North Carolina, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech were the primary contenders, but he also listed offers from Louisville and Missouri, among others.
“I love it down there,” Kenion said. “The feel, how I feel down there. It’s different from a lot of other schools and I love that feeling. I love the coaches down there, real cool coaches.
“They know what they’re talking about and they’re telling me what they would like to see me do. I like what they’re saying.”
South Carolina has two tight ends committed to the 2019 class.
Three-star KeShawn Toney, 6-foot-3, 240-pound prospect from Williston, S.C., is ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 30 tight end in the Class of 2019. Kenion (6-4, 220) is the No. 44-ranked wide receiver in the country.
With Kenion’s pledge, the Gamecocks now have three 4-star prospects in their 2019 haul. Kenion is ranked third-higest among those commitments, behind 4-star quarterback Ryan Hilinski (Orange, Calif.) and 4-star wide receiver Jamario Holley (Rock Hill, S.C.).
What newest commitment Traevon Kenion adds to Gamecocks
Gamecocks will utilize newest commit’s size and speed
Traevon Kenion, the latest commitment to the 2019 South Carolina recruiting class, is listed at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds on his 247Sports profile.
The 4-star wide receiver from Monroe (N.C.) High School will play tight end for the Gamecocks, joining 3-star commitment Keshawn Toney at the position this cycle.
“People are going to look at him, because of his size and height, just because he’s a big guy and he can put on some weight,” Monroe coach Johnny Sowell said. “But I think a lot of people forget that he was a track guy. … He knows how to catch the ball and change gears.”
As a sophomore, Kenion was timed at 22.9 seconds in the 200-meter dash, according to Monroe assistant football coach Quartell Wright.
“Not a lot of 6-4 guys that can run and catch,” Wright said. “You might have big guys who can catch the ball. … To be that big and young, he can catch short routes and go the distance. He can run past people.”
Wright added, “The kid’s got all the physical attributes that you need. He’s big, can run fast and stretch the field.”
What else Traevon Kenion brings to table
There are a few intangibles that also stand out.
“His leadership. He works hard and other kids see that. They see what it takes to get on that level,” Wright said. “Right now, he’s a junior, but he’s being a senior guy. He’s getting kids in the weight room.”
Kenion is the No. 44-ranked wide receiver in the Class of 2019, according to the 247Sports composite.
“You can see the maturity, from him being a freshman to now,” Wright said. “He’s doing everything right, to get and stay right.”
