Collin Hill will be the starting quarterback when the South Carolina Gamecocks open the 2020 football season against the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday, Sept. 26, head coach Will Muschamp announced today.

Hill, a graduate transfer from Colorado State University, edged out sophomore incumbent Ryan Hilinski for the starting nod. The 6-4, 222-pounder has appeared in 18 games including 11 starts during his career while battling through three ACL injuries. While playing quarterback for the Rams, he completed 263-of-433 passes for 3,323 yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He has logged five career 300-yard passing games.

"Collin Hill will start the game against Tennessee," said Coach Muschamp. "I thought both guys had outstanding training camps. We can win with both guys, bottom line. Ryan's had a really good camp. Obviously, there was an advantage for Collin playing for Coach (Mike) Bobo before. Schematically there are some things that helped him. But we can win with both guys. We've got confidence in both guys and, as I told them and our entire football team, we're going into the unknown. We've got to have all hands on deck ready to play. Luke Doty has gotten more reps at the quarterback position, because what if we do lose Collin and Ryan to a COVID situation? We've got to have a bunch of guys ready to play in the game, but Collin will start for us.

Presser from a few days ago before the decision was made.  He's confident, cool and aware.

I've been expecting this since Hill transferred in. Most guys don't use a graduate transfer to go sit on the bench.

I guess I wasn't payin' attention in the off-season and didn't notice he was from Moore and played for Dorman.  I thought I noticed a twang in his voice.  Could it be we finally got us an SC kid at QB who's going to play to win for state pride?

Hill got rolled-into during the Arkansas game last year and was obviously lost for the season.

They were hangin' with the Hogs up to the point that Hill got hurt.  The ARK game was Game 3 for the Rams and they had a rough season after Hill went down.

You gotta know Hill wants some redemption if he's still stayed with it this long and Bobo and knows that.

This year could definitely be a storybook season for Hill if we get the wins.

The crazy thing to think I guess with everyone getting a free year could he come back again next year?  Not sure how that works for a grad transfer.

Yes on coming back next year. He just has to apply for a RS year - which should be as close as you can get to a no-brainer for the NCAA.

But then again, I used "NCAA" and "brains" in the same sentence - the two are usually mutually exclusive.
True dat.

Pts.

bobo's years at uga and csu with a qb who is either a senior or junior who declared early.

Good news Blitzy. Hilinski was not ready last year, not sure if he will be ready at the start of this season either. Hill gives us a proven veteran that knows the system and will allow Hilinski to soak up the Offense at his own pace.

One of my pet peeves is ignoring in-state players and going with out of state guys with similar ratings. I always thought that in-state guys would be more motivated to play for their state flagship school. Hopefully, Hill can show out. One added plus - he was snubbed by the Taters, as he is from their backyard. Hopefully he has motivation - even if we have to wait until 2021 to see the match-up.

Or the playoffs this year........
Well, according to you, Joyner was better than Trevor Lawrence in high school, but Lawrence benefited from "Georgia Recruiting bias".  Hillinski was going to be better than Joyner.  And now Hill is going to be better than Hilinksi.  Look out Joe Burrow passing records!
