Trio of 2018 prospects approaching commitments

August 15, 2017

Decisions forthcoming

Three 2018 prospects with South Carolina offers are set to reveal commitments within the next seven days.

Three-star linebacker Rosendo Louis (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) is up first at 7:30 Tuesday night. Florida State, according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball, is the odds-on favorite. Though South Carolina is listed as a finalist, there hasn’t been much involvement there lately.

Up next is 3-star lineman Raiqwon O’Neal, who will reveal his decision Wednesday night during a live television broadcast with a local TV station near his hometown of Conway, S.C. SEC Country sources believe Rutgers will be the destination — that’s also the most recent trend on the Crystal Ball.

Four-star wide receiver Josh Vann could announce his commitment after Tucker (Ga.) High School opens its 2017 season on Saturday morning in the Corky Kell Classic, but that date isn’t set in stone. If he doesn’t make the decision then, Vann will decide between Georgia and South Carolina on Monday. The Gamecocks have consistently been listed as his leader.

The implications

If Louis follows through with a commitment to the Noles, he’ll be their second linebacker pledge for 2018. Since there are three senior linebackers on the roster, this observer is assuming that Florida State will try to add at least one more to the class.

That’s relevant to South Carolina because two of the top prospects left on the board — Dax Hollifield and Channing Tindall — are also considering Florida State. Hollifield is scheduled to take his official visit to Tallahassee next month and Tindall camped with the Seminoles late last month.

O’Neal was offered by South Carolina this summer after he worked out for Muschamp and defensive line coach Lance Thompson. Rutgers has recruited him as an offensive lineman.

The Gamecocks have two defensive tackles and two defensive ends committed to sign in 2018. With three senior starters scheduled to come off the books at the end of this season, Muschamp and Thompson continue to rebuild the defensive line. Four-star tackle Rick Sandidge is the top remaining target.

South Carolina remains the favorite for Vann, who’s probably the final wide receiver target left in 2018. The Gamecocks already have three committed and there are no seniors on the roster, though redshirt junior Deebo Samuel could declare for the NFL draft after this season.
