Coach Beamer takes over a team coming off consecutive 4-win and 2-win seasons. And, the Gamecocks weren't even a competitive 2-win team this season. Add into that, the recruiting disaster this year. The class currently sits at 107th, with 9 total recruits, all 3*. The highest ranked player is 619th in the nation. Vandy, by comparison, checks in at #48. The only P5 team with a worse class is Oregon State. On top of that, Clemson has been in the top 10 for the last 3 recruiting cycles and has played in 4 national title games, winning 2 since 2015. UGA is also on a run, pushing for the CFP each year.

Looking back at  Holtz entry here, he also inherited a disaster in 1999. However, Clemson was not nearly what they are now. While we went 1-10 in 1998, Clemson only went 3-8. Clemson at that time was in a pretty bad funk, though not as bad of a funk as ours. It was a bad team, but the environment was more manageable than it is now. And, let's face it, there's not really any difference between 2-8 and 1-10.

When you consider the overall state of our team/program, the absolutely catastrophic recruiting situation and the environment with Clemson being a juggernaut and UGA being near-elite, I don't see where an incoming coach has faced a more daunting task. Just far warning keep exception low give it time. This is going to be a hard road ahead yet, but with the right staff emplace and some luck can be done.

I think he will add quite a few players between now and NSD in February ... the real work begins with his next two classes. He's got to make hay with them to build any sort of on-field momentum.

Hello, with all that said I think that the class is not that bad looking at the recruits it's just going to be an small class, I mean ESPN , AND 24 /7 , and others rate these kids, but you have to be able to look at film, who they played against etc.  I think if he brings in some JC people will be just fine, as I have said  and got an lot of heat I think the talent is not that far with an great recruiting coach, and can relate to players. if Beamer get's an top notch staff, and looking at things that's what is working on  he could win 6 maybe 7 wins next year with an little help , Yes we all had high hopes with Holtz, and Steve

I really truly believe that some of these coaches quit on these kids early, and the injures didn't help either, with an élite strength and conditioning coach could have an good shot at it,  The problem  at CAROLINA  is that we don't have an lot of winning years here, so you have to sell these kids on coming here and say look we won when I  Was here last I've been at winning programs everywhere there is no reason not to believe that this cannot be turned around quickly , everything is in place.  I keep saying this BEAMER has an different swag  about him, than any others I have seen .

I tend to agree with you, Ace.  With transfer portal, I don’t think one bad year of recruiting is going to make the impact it used to.

The cocks and the beavers are last in P5 recruiting! I think this year was just a crap show due to covid and next year will be a better year to see what is truly there to work with. Of course we have some holes to plug but IMO I don't think we are far off from being competitive,

I said before that the really important recruiting is with the players currently on the roster - convincing them not to transfer, and convincing others - assuming that we want them - to play another year. Remember that everyone on the roster has another year of eligibility, if they choose to use it.

For instance, who would contribute more next year - a 4* Freshman LB, or a proven and experienced veteran like Sherrod Greene?
Agreed. I have read we have one or maybe two more JUCOS who will sign in February or around Xmas, and let's see how CSB fills out the class between now and late NSD. Then it's all a fresh slate and we can see how this staff puts in work over the next year.

Not only are we 2-8, both teams that we did beat have also fired their coach this year for having a crappy season.

I agree with what a lot are saying in this thread about talent already on the roster.  It's there.  The D-line in particular has nice talent and QB looks set up quite well.  I scratch my head over what happened to this team.  We should have beaten Tenn and quite honestly, played UF fairly straight up for 3 quarters.  We kill Vandy and beat Auburn.  Then the wheels came off starting with LSU and really not sure what the heck happened.  We looked completely out of sync and guys were lost, especially on defense.  I fee confident CSB will hire a great staff and field something competitive next year with no quit in them.

You very seldom win with new recruits - they provide depth and you need to have guys developing in the pipeline, but a doughnut hole class typically impacts a team more down the road - two or three years later, when those recruits are counted on to be the veterans on the team.

Muschamp averaged #21 on his classes, and those are the players that Beamer will win or lose with in 2021 and 2022. Muschamp's problems at Florida were not with recruiting - McIlwain won the SEC East with Muschamp's recruits in his first two years as Head Coach. When Muschamp's players started to leave, McIlwain's sub-par recruiting began to drag on UF and they fell off.

It is hard to judge this year's team due to the opt outs and injuries. But there is a LOT more talent that people realize - we should be a Top 25 team based on the recruiting.  So if Beamer can fill a few holes with JUCOs and grad transfers -there will be a LOT of grad transfers available this year - then we should be competitive for the next couple of years. But we will need a Top 25 class next year to keep the ball rolling.
Well put.

Good stuff, Duff and Ace. What mystified me most is why our DL, stocked with 4 and 5-star talent, underperformed so badly. Hopefully our new DL coach can figure that puzzle out.

Ok, this year was going to be tough to hold onto a class coming off back to back crappy seasons -- even if we held onto Muschamp.  Prior to accepting  disappointment about this class, let's see where we are after the February signing deadline.  Beamer has a real opportunity here in the next couple of months.

I thought a big issues was the overall size of the DL.  Smaller faster players that were getting pushed around a good bit and really looked like they had trouble getting off the blocks.  If you look I think Pickens may be one of the heaviest at 300 the rest are 275-285.  No real big guys to help anchor the middle of that line and our larger players are also our youngest with the exception of Sandidge and I am not really sure what happened with him this year.

I don't think it'll be that hard for Beamer.  I mean, SC has already closed the talent gap with UGA and Clemson.  There is no gap in talent between the 3 schools.
