Two more transfer targets to visit Friday
Jan. 14, 2022
LB West Weeks (6-2 220) of the University of Virginia and Watkinsville, GA, and RB Dante Miller (5-9 185) of Columbia University and Rockingham, NC.
Weeks had an impressive freshman season for the Cavaliers with 31 tackles, 1 sack and 5 pass break ups. He’s been offered by the Gamecocks, Southern Cal and LSU since entering the Portal, and he visited Southern Cal last weekend.
The Gamecocks have also offered Weeks’s younger brother, 2023 LB Whit Weeks (6-2 190), and he will visit Saturday for a junior day. He’s also picked up offers from Southern Cal, LSU, Utah, Stanford, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, NC State, Miami, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, Boston College and Virginia. He also plans to visit Georgia and Oklahoma this month.
Miller will make the drive down US 1 from Rockingham with his mother. They plan to arrive around 10:00 AM and spend the day going through football and academic related meetings, and various tours. Miller will be a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility. Right now, the most the Gamecocks can offer is a PWO opportunity, and he understands that.
“There’s a shortage of scholarships, of course, is what the running backs coach said,” Miller said. “I’ll probably come as a PWO, but hopefully I can get a scholarship. Obviously, I look to have a pretty big role on the team. I think I can come to South Carolina, if I was to commit, and come in and help the team a lot with my playing ability.”
That playing ability is built around speed. And not just ordinary speed, but world class-type speed. Miller said he regularly runs a 4.25 forty-yard dash and has been clocked at Columbia at 4.22. With his speed and strength, which he says people overlook, Miller believes he can be a contributor in the Gamecock backfield.
“The running back room is kind of short right now. There are a lot of younger guys, and they just brought a guy in from Wake Forest. So, there’s only four running backs there,” Miller said. “The scheme has a lot of plays that I ran at Columbia to utilize my speed and my vision. I have pretty good vision at running back. Whether they are using me to run inside zone, outside zone or running outside the backfield, those are ways I can utilize my capabilities at running back. I believe myself to be a pretty explosive athlete and that is a very explosive offense.”
Miller was First Team All-Ivy League this past season after rushing for 814 yards and 4 touchdowns in a 10-game season. He had seven runs of 22 yards or more with a long run of 75 yards. He also had 9 receptions for 43 yards. For his career with the Lions, Miller rushed for 1281 yards and 5 touchdowns, and he averaged 5 yards per carry.
Miller has offers from Samford, Sacramento State, Rhode Island, Tennessee State and Albany, plus he said an ACC school near his home, which he preferred not to identify, is showing interest. He hopes to make a decision on his next move by the end of the month or in early February, and Friday’s visit to South Carolina will have some influence on that.
“If the visit went great, I would possibly make a decision in the next week,” Miller said. “After speaking to my coaches and my mom, we feel like we don’t need to make a decision for maybe the next two or two and-a-half weeks.”
Miller is going back to Columbia for the spring semester and will work-out, if not run, with the track team there. If he ends up with the Gamecocks, he said he would not enroll until May or June at the earliest. His major, by the way, is sociology, but his internships have been in business and banking.
