Two rising Nashville DBs feel the same way about South Carolina, Will Muschamp
June 21, 2016
The state of Tennessee is loaded with major college football prospects, and a few of them are squarely on Will Muschamp’s radar.
The first-year South Carolina coach saw two of the Volunteer State’s top 2017 defensive backs late last week when T.J. Carter and Kaleb Oliver rode to Columbia for camp.
Carter, Tennessee’s highest ranked cornerback, is a 3-star prospect from Stratford Comprehensive High School (Nashville).
“I have a good impression of South Carolina. I have them high up on my list right now. I wanted to see what they had to offer, and that was actually my first time going, so it was a good experience,” Carter said. “I feel like I have a good relationship with the coaches. It’s a good family atmosphere.”
Oliver, another 3-star from Oakland High School (Murfreesboro), is ranked the No. 3 safety in the state.
Last Thursday’s visit was the second for Oliver, who was on campus earlier this year when his brother, Kyle Oliver, visited the school as a tight end recruit.
“It was nice seeing how the indoor (facility) looks. I can’t wait to see how it is when it’s finished,” Oliver said.
Bobby Bentley serves as South Carolina’s area recruiter for Nashville, so the Gamecocks running backs coach led the prospects on a brief tour around the facilities.
They also spent time with Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson.
“(Muschamp) told us that we looked good up there and that our movement is good, all this other stuff,” Oliver said.
Robinson offered a similar message.
“He said it was nice working with us. He showed us a little bit how it is at South Carolina, with the drills we were doing,” Oliver said.
The two friends could very well end up at the same school. Several schools have offered both, including South Carolina, Mississippi State, Louisville and Memphis.
Both had good things to say about the Gamecocks, and their head coach in particular.
“Coach Muschamp is a defensive guy. I like coach Muschamp,” Carter said. “He has an awesome resume of developing DBs and getting them to the next level. I just like how he takes pride in the defense and stuff like that.”
Oliver added, “I like coach Muschamp. He’s known for creating DBs and he’s a defensive-oriented guy. It has a home environment, the way it feels.”
