Two South Carolina assistants recognized as top-25 recruiters

Feb. 09, 2018

When Will Muschamp was hired as South Carolina’s football coach, he announced he wanted almost every coach on his staff to be a big factor in recruiting.

The 2018 cycle showed he had a few, at least by the measures of the recruiting services.

Gamecocks offensive line coach Eric Wolford was named a top 25 recruiter by Rivals, while offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon came in at No. 25 in 247’s recruiter rankings.

Wolford was in his first year with the Gamecocks and was the recruiter of record on two or three four-stars depending on which service one used.

“The Gamecocks just snuck into the top 20 with a 2018 class that boasts nine four-stars among 22 total recruits,” Rivals writer Josh Helmholdt wrote. “Three of those four-stars are on the offensive line and credited to position coach Eric Wolford, who is in his first year back with the Gamecocks after stints as a head coach at Youngstown State and an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers.

His four-stars were Dylan WonnumJovaughn Gwyn and Maxwell Iyama.

McClendon was credited with having a hand in eight commits, including with Atlanta-area four-stars Jaycee Horn , Josh Vann and Kingsley Enagbare.

Gamecocks running backs coach Bobby Bentley came in 50th in the 247 list.
