SUMTER — 4 star Ty’Son Williams 5'11" 200lbs is starting to see the finish line of his recruitment – but he’s not there yet. Williams coming to USC Black Magic Showcase Saturday

The Crestwood High standout and top Class of 2015 instate running back has narrowed his options to three schools and has a timeframe for when the announcement will come.

“I just want to have that feeling and go with it,” Williams said Wednesday as the Knights continued summer workouts. “It’s a lifetime decision. You don’t want to rush into it. I want to sit on it long enough and make sure it’s the right decision – but not sit on it too long.”

He expects to decide in the next month between South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. Notre Dame and Wisconsin are “pretty much” off his list, he said, a decision he made because of his desire to stay close to family. Williams lives with his mom in Sumter and has a lot of relatives in Georgia. He was born in Macon, Ga., and grew up a fan of the home-state Bulldogs.

“I am definitely going to stay in the Southeast,” he said. “I want to be able to see family and go home on breaks and make it easier for them to come see me too.”

Williams considered an Aug. 1 ceremony that would include his teammates. That could still happen, he said. Or he could decide any day to pick up the phone, call the college and commit. No matter what, he said, he won’t stretch it beyond Crestwood’s Aug. 29 season-opening game.

The 6-foot, 202-pound Williams is a four-star prospect and the No. 3 overall prospect in South Carolina for this class, according to the 247Sports Composite rating, which factors in all networks. ESPN likes him as the No. 1 overall talent in the state for 2015.

Defensive line coach Deke Adams is recruiting Williams for the Gamecocks, who are expected to add one more running back to the class to go with A.J. Turner of Clifton, Va.

Here’s what Williams said about his top three schools:

• Georgia: “It was my home school, my dream school growing up – the tradition and growing up as a child watching them play. It is a great program. They produce a lot of good backs and send them to the league. I like that about them.”

• UNC: “The campus is real nice. It’s a real good football program. They’re on the up-and-up. They were kind of top tier back in the day. They’re just working their way back up to the top.”

• USC: “I like Coach Adams. It’s a good campus. Just having the chance to be able to play early. At least one of the two freshmen will have to suit up and play. It’s a good opportunity for early playing time.”

Williams said he’s been to USC, UNC and Clemson this summer. He visited Georgia earlier this year but not recently. He plans to be in Columbia on Saturday for the Gamecocks’ annual Showcase Camp.

While he wasn’t ready to rank his finalists, he did say that Adams is his favorite recruiter and his best relationship with a running backs coach is with UNC’s Larry Porter.

“I like Coach Adams a lot,” he said. “He’s a stand-up guy. He tells you exactly how it is. He doesn’t try to sugarcoat things. Ever since he’s been recruiting me, I always feel like I can just talk to him.”

Williams said his primary communication with USC is through Adams. He talks with running backs coach Everette Sands, but not as frequently as he does with UNC’s Porter or Georgia’s Bryan McClendon, he said.

His official recruiters at all three schools coach other positions. Williams said he made a connection with Porter last month at UNC’s Freak Show camp, and the two have talked often ever since.

“I could go to the University of South Carolina this weekend and the same thing could happen,” Williams said. “You just never know.”

A good relationship with his future running backs coach is important, Williams said, especially with a decision upcoming. He expects the chance to build on his bond with Sands this weekend.

“We are definitely going to talk when I go up there,” he said. “I’m going to take it all in and ask questions, enjoy my time there and talk with some of the other recruits. It’s definitely going to weigh into my decision. You want to have the healthiest relationship with your coaches.”

It’s important to get the decision out of the way so he can focus on his senior season at Crestwood, he said, without the distractions that recruiting can bring.

On Wednesday, he was wearing a South Carolina hat and wristband. Don’t read into that, he said. There’s North Carolina and Georgia gear at home.

“I like all of them,” Williams said. “I could see myself at all of them. Every time I go on a campus, I could see myself there. I can picture myself there.”
