Under Armour game Day 1 notes
December 31, 2017
ORLANDO, Fla. — Several South Carolina recruiting targets from the 2018 class reported for the Under Armour All-America Game on Saturday afternoon.
The group this year includes three Gamecocks commitments and a pair of targets still on the board.
First up
Three-star linebacker Rosendo Louis (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) and 3-star center Hank Manos (Chapin, S.C.) were the first two commitments who stopped by the media room.
One of the most interesting tidbits gleaned from Louis, a former Florida State commit, was how he started playing football as a 5-year-old in South Florida.
“It was my older sister,” he said. “She played tackle football and she used to run me over in the hallway. That’s who really got me started playing.”
Latisha, now 23, was a running back and linebacker. These days, she’s enrolled at the police academy in Daytona Beach, Fla.
On the first day of the early signing period, coach Will Muschamp told reporters that Louis could play every linebacker spot in the Gamecocks defense.
“I see myself playing first and second down [in the] middle,” Louis said Saturday. “Third and fourth, I can rush off the edge.”
Man in the middle
Manos, like Louis, will enroll at South Carolina in January.
When he makes the short trip from Chapin to Columbia, Manos said Gamecocks fans can expect to add a hard-working guy to their team.
Now that his wrestling career is finished, Manos doesn’t have to worry about cutting weight to compete. In past winters, he’d slim down from about 280 to 265, which is 10 pounds under the maximum in the heavyweight division.
These days, his focus is to “try to get big, not fat.”
The Georgia peachesFour-star tackle Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.), the lone non-committed target playing in the Under Armour All-America Game, told reporters that he will take four official visits in January: Auburn, LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee.
South Carolina and Auburn are recruiting him the hardest. A decision will be announced on National Signing Day.
Four-star cornerback Jaycee Horn (Alpharetta, Ga.) has signed, but he won’t join South Carolina until the summer.
Life, he said, has “been easier” since inking with the Gamecocks during the early signing period.
“You don’t have coaches hitting you up since you’ve signed,” Horn said. “I’m just trying to focus on school and finish up strong.”
He added, “It was definitely a big weight off my shoulders. I don’t have to take anymore visits or anything like that. I’m just locked in, so now I’m just trying to get ready for the college level, physically, mentally, all of those things.”
Four-star outside linebacker Quay Walker (Cordele, Ga.) told ESPN that he was planning to take four official visits before settling on a decision. South Carolina was not among them.
