Under Armour game practice notes, observations
December 31, 2017
ORLANDO, Fla. — South Carolina cornerback signee Jaycee Horn sat out the first day of practice at the Under Armour All-America Game.
Jaycee’s father, Pro Bowl wide receiver Joe Horn, told SEC Country on Sunday that he’s been dealing with a hip pointer and isn’t quite 100 percent. The younger Horn could play at some point this week, though his decision hasn’t been finalized.
One decision that has is where the 4-star from Alpharetta (Ga.) High School will play college football. He signed with South Carolina on the first day of the early signing period, less than 24 hours after committing to the Gamecocks.
“Will Muschamp got Jaycee Horn when he took time out of his schedule, to come see him work,” Joe said, referring to Muschamp’s trip to watch an Alpharetta practice.
“That’s when he got Jaycee Horn. Maybe a lot of head coaches ought to take that cue, to get more players.”
Joe added, “No other head coach did that.”
If that’s what helped pushed South Carolina over the top for Jaycee, who was once committed to Tennessee, then it certainly helped that he and his father thank so highly of Muschamp and defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson.
“He’s straight up. He’s real. If you’re a baller, you’re a baller. … I’m a straight up-type dad,” Joe said of Muschamp.
That’s what he “loved about” the Gamecocks’ two coaches.
“At the end of the day, you cannot blow smoke up your child’s behind,” Joe said. “You’ve got to tell them the truth. The eye in the sky doesn’t lie. Either you’ve got it or you don’t.
“You get with a great coach that’s put guys in the league before, that can coach your son up, whether he’s at Clemson, Wake Forest or Alabama, wherever he is, if he’s a great coach and he gets a kid that has great athletic ability, he’s going to be at the next level.”
South Carolina recruiting from Disney
Though Jaycee Horn wasn’t on the field working out at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex, fellow Gamecocks signees Hank Manos and Rosendo Louis were.
Manos, a 3-star center from Chapin, S.C., had some ups and downs during 1-on-1 work, but settled in once the teams moved into the full 11-on-11 period.
Louis, a 3-star linebacker from Deerfield Beach, Fla., is a big, imposing-looking linebacker. It looked like he’s working in the middle for their team.
One of the outside linebackers flanking Louis is 4-star Alabama commitment Quay Walker (Cordele, Ga.). After practice finished on Sunday, he declined all interview requests.
Horn and 4-star tackle Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.) are on the other squad. Wonnum was working with the first-team at right tackle.
