Thought I'd give a quick breakdown on how a few former players are performing in the minors this year.
Jackie Bradley Jr. (Red Sox)- High-A: In 51 games, hitting .376 with an OBP of .492, already an amazing 23 doubles and 3 home runs, also 13 steals, likely to move up to AA soon
John Taylor (Mariners)- Low-A: 4.87 ERA in 20.1 innings pitched, has struggled with his control giving up 12 walks, still getting a ton of groundouts and only one home run given up
Steven Neff (Giants)- Low-A: 3.73 ERA in 31.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen, has struck out 35 and walked 14 so Neff is off to a promising start this year
Scott Wingo (Dodgers)- High-A: aggressive assignment for Wingo, hitting .250 but, of course, his OBP is .376 with 7 doubles, 4 triples and 7 steals
Sam Dyson (Blue Jays)- High-A: went 2-0 while showing very good command after sitting out 2011 following surgery, he has been promoted to AA and has moved to the bullpen
Blake Cooper (Diamondbacks)- High-A: working solely out of bullpen, is 1-3 over 21.2 with 26 strikeouts and only 8 walks
Bobby Haney (Giants)- High-A: the power hitting Haney is batting .378 in just 37 ABs after missing more than a month with injury
Whit Merrifield (Royals)- High-A: In 51 games mostly leading off, hitting .274 with 12 doubles, 5 homers and 12 stolen bases
Justin Dalles (Orioles)- Low-A: started season late and hit .329 with 4 home runs in 20 games before being moved up to High-A recently
Reese Havens (Mets)- Double-A: has struggled this year batting .154 in 29 games, has drawn over 20 walks with less than 100 at bats but is also striking out a lot
Mike Cisco (Phillies) - Double-A: impressive 1.30 ERA through 27.2 inning out of the pen with 27 strikeouts and only 8 walks, Cisco has been very consistent and could eventually find himself in a big league bullpen
Adrian Morales and Peter Mooney have yet to see their seasons begin while James Darnell is getting his shot with the Padres, and Justin Smoak is playing better each month and is poised for a big second half. Brian Roberts is rehabbing and could see him back in the Orioles lineup within a few weeks along with fellow Orioles and Gamecocks Steve Pearce and Steven Tolleson.
Some former Gamecock commits are having great years, most notably Wil Myers who is now one of the top 3 prospects in the game with his 19 home runs already this year. Exciting to add more to these ranks over the next few days.
