 Report: Williams’ announcement time set

According to Brandon Sudge of macon.com, 4-star cornerback Jamyest Williams has set his Feb. 1 signing day announcement for 9 a.m.

Williams, who committed to the Gamecocks before football season, will announce that he’s signing with South Carolina or Georgia.

On Monday, Williams visited with Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson. Robinson also made his way to the Atlanta area last Thursday, the first day of the contact period.

Williams, a senior at Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., will take an official visit to Georgia this weekend. South Carolina is set to host him the final weekend before signing day.

Twyman (Washington, D.C.) has also taken an official visit to Pittsburgh.

“The players treated me like a player,” Twyman told Phil Kornblut after the visit. “Coach Lance Thompson was real, real good to my family. They can see me getting sacks.”

The Gamecocks are a “high priority” for Twyman, who lists no favorites.

Urich’s scouting report on Johnson

South Carolina quarterback commitment Jay Urich (Piedmont, S.C.) has made no bones about his pursuit of 4-star Pendleton, S.C., defensive end Brad Johnson, both of whom were on campus this past weekend for official visits.

With that in mind, SEC Country sought out Urich for his take on Johnson, who’s the No. 21-ranked weak-side defensive end in the Class of 2017.

“I know he is very, very quick. He is strong. I’d say those are his two best qualities on the field, just his quickness and his strength,” Urich said. “It’s just different from a lot of different other people. It just amazes me how he plays on the field.

“He has with that mentality of … if I’m a quarterback, he’s one of the guys you don’t want to play against. He is going to be able to whip somebody in front of him and be very, very physical and very, very fast.”

According to Urich, that doesn’t match Johnson’s personality away from the field.

“He’s so polite, a great guy. He just doesn’t seem like somebody who would be mean and nasty on the field. He has that mentality,” Urich said. “He does such a great job of flipping that switch and knowing when to be angry and all that kind of stuff on the field, then being a great friend and great person off the field, too.

“Those are some great qualities.”

Johnson lists South Carolina and Virginia Tech as his finalists.

Registering with recruits

South Carolina tight end commitment Will Register, another official guest from last weekend, shared an interesting tidbit of information during his post-visit interview.

Apparently, a set of players have banded together to form a leadership group of sorts.

“They had a group of about 10 of them, I’d say. Bryson Allen-Williams, K.C. Crosby, Jake Bentley, Zack Bailey, a few others as well,” Register said. “They just talked to us, told us their mindset this season.

“They want to work hard and they want players to come in and help them win championships, so it was good to hear that from players on the team, that they’re very accepting of the recruits coming in this season.”

That's what we want in a DE!
