Upstate defender, a Gamecocks target, returns to South Carolina for camp

June 15, 2016

COLUMBIA, S.C. — After a busy run of on-campus recruiting events, Wednesday’s Will Muschamp Football Camp was on the lighter side.

Three-star defensive end Brad Johnson has arrived in Columbia, S.C., to begin his two-day visit.

Muschamp greeted Johnson and Pendleton High School classmate Semaj Anderson after they finished filling out camp paperwork.

Strength and conditioning coordinator Jeff Dillman embraced the 3-star defensive end after he ran the 40-yard-dash. There appears to be a connection from Johnson’s prior visits to South Carolina.

Ranked as the No. 20 weak-side defensive end in the class of 2017, Johnson lists offers from South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Michigan State and Notre Dame.

Anderson, who won the South Carolina AA state championship in the high jump with a 6-foot, 8-inch mark. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound rising senior will be playing his first season of football this fall for Pendleton.

South Carolina is the favorite to sign Johnson, according to the 247Sports Crystal Ballpredictions. The Gamecocks already hold commitments from three defensive ends in the ’17 class: Devonte Wyatt, Tyreek Johnson and Davonne Bowen, all 3-star players who have committed within the last three months.
