Upstate safety lists South Carolina among his top two leaders

May 21, 2016

Lummie Young visited South Carolina twice this spring, and that has helped the Gamecocks become one of the leaders for his services.

The 6-foot-2, 188-pound safety from Westside High School (Anderson, S.C.), was on campus in March for junior day, then again in April for the Gamecocks’ cookout.

“We got to spend a ton of time with the coaches and some of the players, just hanging out and having fun,” Young said.

Rated as the No. 12 prospect in the state in the Class of 2017, Young knows he’s wanted by South Carolina coach Will Muschamp.

“(Muschamp) expressed how much he wants me to attend USC and how much they need and could use me,” Young said.

The interest is mutual.

“I like how close to home it is,” Young said. “I like how the head coach would be my position coach (and) I like that the head coach has put players in the NFL.”

Of his list of offers, which is made up primarily of ACC schools, South Carolina sits second. Duke leads.

“It’s because of the elite academics that Duke has to offer,” Young said.

Young will return to Duke’s campus on Sunday. Virginia Tech is scheduled to host him next month.

Location, academics and playing time were listed as factors that will weigh into his decision.

South Carolina has eight commitments for the Class of 2017 at this point, but none are definitely going to play in the secondary.
