USC checks out quarterback in camp Friday

USC has not taken a quarterback for the 2014 class at this point, and may not, but one of their potential targets was in camp Friday morning. Tyler Harris of Blackshear, GA threw in front of Steve Spurrier and GA Mangus. He’s hoping his showing will lead to an offer. He has an offer from Mississippi State, South Florida and Troy. Harris visited USC earlier this year.
DB DJ Smith of Marietta, GA told Clemson247 that Clemson and USC are his leaders but he won’t make a decision until Signing Day. Smith is not attending any summer camps. He visited USC last weekend and plans to visit USC and Clemson again this summer. He will also attend the Georgia-Clemson game. Some of his other offers are Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Ohio State, Michigan, North Carolina and Notre Dame.
2017 DB Savalas Cann of Bamberg-Ehrhardt, the brother of USC OL AJ Cann, was offered by USC after the Friday morning camp session. He was offered earlier in the summer by North Carolina and NC State.
B-E 2015 DE Sammie Davis and OL Drew Wilson also were offered by UNC and NC State in camp earlier this summer.
DL Abu Lamin of Fort Scott JC, KS arrived in Columbia Friday to begin his official visit. Lamin is a native of Fayetteville, NC. He visited Florida officially last weekend and has also been to Auburn and Arkansas. He’s also looking at Arizona State or Tennessee for a visit after this weekend.
QB Will Hunter of Lexington is attending several camps this summer in search of his first offer. He is hopeful that offer comes prior to the season. “I went to Appalachian State on Sunday, I’m going to a Furman camp Thursday and I’m going to Charlotte later in the week,” said Hunter. “App State was a lot of fun. There were a lot of people there.” He feels that Charlotte is showing the most interest and is looking forward to his trip to the Queen City. “I’ve got a couple of more camps I’m going to but I’m not sure where,” he said. “I’m kind of find out when we get closer (to the date of the camp).” Hunter does not have any favorites. “Most coaches are just telling me they want to see me at camp,” he said. “That’s about it right now.”
WR Tyshun Samuel of Chapman had Vanderbilt and North Carolina as his leaders with a slight lead in favor of the Commodores. He just returned from a camp at Chapel Hill and the Tar Heels may have pulled even. “My two favorites are Vandy and UNC,” he said. “I had a lot of fun at the camp up there. It was a lot of one-on-one drills and stuff like that.” With offers from Vanderbilt, North Carolina, NC State, Maryland, Charlotte, Old Dominion, Appalachian State and East Carolina, he is also receiving interest from USC. Samuel will be in Columbia Saturday for a 7-on-7 tournament. “While we’re there, we’re going to tour the campus,” he said. ‘I’ve heard some from USC and they told me they want to see how I play and they might offer.” He says he could be interested in the Gamecocks and likes the style of offense USC runs. Samuel may visit Old Dominion this summer but says he has very few plans and could wait until football to take all five of his official visits. He plans to commit on Signing Day.
ATH Noah Brown of Sparta, NJ has cut his list to USC, Ohio State, Vanderbilt, Southern Cal, Rutgers, Michigan State, Virginia Tech and North Carolina. He plans to visit all the schools this summer and then cut his list some more. Last season Brown rushed for 837 yards and 14 touchdowns and had 41 receptions for 620 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also returned four kicks for touchdowns.
DB Darius Harvey of Tallahassee could visit USC with his teammate DB Kendall Randolph in a couple of weeks. Harvey says he is hopeful he will make the trip but will not know for sure until sometime next week. “I really would like to go,” said Harvey. “I’m still interested in the Gamecocks.” He recently received his first offer from Florida Atlantic and plans to visit the school this summer. Other schools showing interest include Ole Miss, Kentucky, South Florida, Florida International, Iowa State and Central Florida. Harvey last spoke with USC when assistant coach Kurt Botkin attended a practice in late-May. He does not have any favorites.
LB Tergray Scales (6-1 210) of Cincinnati visited Clemson earlier this year and appreciated what he saw. “It’s a nice atmosphere and I liked the campus,” said Scales. “They just told me to look around and if I had any questions, to ask. I liked the coaches that I met there and I liked the school.” Scales was also encouraged to remain in touch with the coaching staff but has not spoken with them in about a month. “They didn’t really mention anything about offering (me) but told me to call them,” he said. Scales added that he would definitely be more interested in the Tigers should they show more interest in him. His offers include Indiana, Louisville, Western Michigan, Akron, Bowling Green, Ohio, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Florida Atlantic, Boston College and Illinois among others. His other visits have been to Louisville, Vanderbilt and Boston College. He plans to begin narrowing his list closer to the season and will schedule his official visits at that point.
DE Jalyn Holmes of Norfolk, VA committed to Ohio State earlier this week while camping there. Clemson and Florida State were the other top teams on his list.
