Big wins will now mean more big dollars for Steve Spurrier.
South Carolina’s board of trustees voted Friday to increase the incentives in Spurrier’s contract for winning nine, 10, 11 and 12 games. Spurrier, who led the Gamecocks to their first 11-win season in history last year, will get $50,000 for a nine-win season, $100,000 for a 10-win season, $200,000 for an 11-win season and $300,000 for 12 or more wins in a season.
Spurrier earns $2.9 million per year.
First-year defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward, who was promoted from secondary coach in December, received an amendment to his contract that requires the school to pay him the full value remaining on his deal if he is fired without cause. Ward has a two-year contract and earns $550,000 annually.
Women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley also received a $50,000 raise to $300,000 annually. The incentives in her contract also were increased, including going from $20,000 to $75,000 for winning the SEC regular season title.
