USC commit Shi Smith: Landing OrTre would make duo ‘unstoppable
August 24, 2016
South Carolina wide receiver commit Shi Smith hopes another Smith will commit to the Gamecocks next month.
Wando High’s OrTre Smith, the top-ranked player in the state for the class of 2017, is set to announce his decision Sept. 11. He is choosing between the Gamecocks, Clemson, Florida, North Carolina and Georgia.
Shi Smith said the duo would be tough for opposing teams to stop.
“I would love to see OrTre join me,” he said. “It would be unstoppable with him on one side of the ball and me on the other side of the ball. It would be hard for the defense to stop us.”
It was hard for the Chapman defense to stop Shi Smith this past week as he helped Union County to a 48-32 win over the Panthers.
Smith caught eight passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns in the victory but left the game in the third quarter after injuring his ankle.
He returned to the field on the hands team when Chapman attempted an on-side kick late but did not play on offense after the middle of the third quarter.
“It got tackled into and I rolled it again,” he said. “I think I did pretty good to be, not trying to get a big head, but the best player on the field. And they double-teamed me sometimes, but I did pretty good.”
Smith keeps in constant contact with South Carolina’s coaching staff, including wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon.
“They texted me and told me, ‘Have a good game against Chapman.’ They’re going to text me every week and make sure I’m doing all my work,” he said.
Smith is thrilled with how well McClendon and the rest of the USC staff have recruited lately.
The Gamecocks have landed three four-star commitments this month.
“I went to camp with all of them. I know all of them. I love it,” he said.
