Shawn Smith
USC landed one of Georgia’s top prospects late last month in WR Shawn Smith of Brunswick. He picked the Gamecocks from an offer list that also includes Miami, Duke, Georgia, Kentucky, West Virginia, Florida, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Auburn and Illinois. Smith made his decision to go with the Gamecocks after attending the cookout staged by Will Muschamp and his staff.
“When I went up there it was just love,” Smith said. “Me and Coach BMac (Bryan McClendon) are close. We’ve been close since he was coaching at UGA. He sees me playing slot receiver, playing in the Wildcat, just playing me around a lot. He just likes how I’m real shifty and my speed and that I can catch.”
Last season Smith had 33 catches for 315 yards and 2 touchdowns and he rushed for 509 yards and 7 scores.
Smith knows the commitment to the Gamecocks will be challenged by the other schools recruiting him and while he’s strong in the pledge he’s not ready to shut down the recruiting activity.
“I’m very heavy on South Carolina right now,” Smith said. “Another school would have to do something special for me to decommit, like I’ve got to fall in love with a different school for me to decommit from South Carolina. I’m going to wait until the summer to visit some schools and then around the first game of the season I’m probably going to start planning my official visits.”
Smith also visited Alabama this spring and doesn’t have any other visits planned at this point.
