Local linebacker continues interest in South Carolina
Top prospect to visit Dawn Staley, USC this weekend
South Carolina offensive line commitment Will Putnam of Harrisburg, N.C., has been to games at other places since Steve Spurrier’s resignation but he is not wavering on his pledge.
“I’m still a strong commitment to South Carolina,” he said. “Like other recruits have done, I went and visited some other games and some other campuses just as an insurance policy to have something to fall back on. Right now it’s a strong commitment.”
Virginia Tech and N.C. State are the two other schools showing Putnam the strongest interest outside of USC. Putnam said once the new coach and staff are in place, he will go in and meet with them.
“See if they like me and I like them, that’s the question to be answered,” he said. “Have to see how I gel with them.”
Putnam said he has been in touch with Shawn Elliott and he will be in for the Florida game. He’s looking at the Clemson weekend for his official visit.
Stallings still firm
Defensive end Cecil Stallings of Tucker, Ga., also is a Gamecocks commitment and said he’s still 100 percent with that pledge.
“I feel good about it,” Stalling said, adding he can’t see himself changing his plans at this point. He has been in touch with Lorenzo Ward. Stallings has not been to a game at USC this season and had hoped to come in this week but can’t make it. Ole Miss has been in touch recently about coming in for a visit, but he hasn’t scheduled one.
Brunson
Linebacker T.J. Brunson of Richland Northeast remains committed to Louisville and visited there last weekend. He will be at USC for the Florida game and most likely for the Clemson game.
Brunson knows a new head coach at USC likely will mean new coaches on the defensive staff, but that doesn’t affect his feelings.
“The school is not going to change,” he said.
Brunson said he’s still talking with Purdue as well. He had 16 tackles in his game last week.
No Pride contact yet
Greer defensive back Troy Pride announced a decommitment from Virginia Tech on Thursday with the pending coaching change there. He said he’s looking at North Carolina, Notre Dame, Tennessee and others.
Up to this point he has not been getting much interest from USC or Clemson. He’s not scheduled any visits.
Miller covets offer
Defensive back Dreshun Miller of Marietta, Ga., will make an unofficial visit to USC Saturday and is hopeful of eventually landing an offer from the Gamecocks. Miller has been talking with recruiter G.A. Mangus and is optimistic his new senior film will impress him and the staff. Miller has offers from Coastal Carolina, Carson Newman and Valdosta State.
