Last week the USC defense held Vanderbilt to 13 points and fewer than 300 yards of total offense and made enough stops and plays to bail out the struggling Gamecock offense. Certainly not a bad debut, but a couple of mistakes in the secondary and a controversial fourth down playthat had even Steve Spurrier scratching his headmade it clear Lorenzo Ward’s unit still has some things to work out.

“We didn’t play bad the first game,” Ward said after practice Thursday. We gave up three big plays. If we eliminate those, I thought we played pretty good, based on the field position we had. Most good teams show the most improvement from their first game to the second and we expect that from the guys on Saturday.”

This week Lorenzo Ward’s unit will try to slow down East Carolina. The Pirates offense scored 35 points in a win over Appalachian State last week. Like a lot of teams these days, ECU like to play at a fast pace.

“That’s the style of offense they play, “said Ward. “They’re not going to sit back and hold the ball a lot. The quarterback is going to get rid of the football. We’re definitely going to have to play well in space so it puts a lot of pressure on us.” USC and ECU play at 12:21 Saturday in Columbia.
