4 star DL Ulric Jones (6-6 290) of Butler JC, KS said Monday he’s decommitted from Maryland and will sign with either USC or the Terps on Wednesday afternoon, the first day of the signing period for junior college mid-year transfers. Jones is a native of Oxford, AL who committed to Mississippi State out of high school but had to go to junior college first.
Jones is good friends with former USC linebacker commitment Davon Durant and was drawing interest from the Gamecocks while they were involved with Durant. When Durant decommitted, Jones was concerned the Gamecocks would lose interest but Deke Adams contacted him over Thanksgiving and the relationship has developed from there.
“My visit was great,” Jones said. “It’s a beautiful place. Coach Adams is a great coach and a great person to be with. That will have a big impact (on the decision). We’re real tight. We talk about every day.”
In fact, Jones and Adams talked earlier on Monday.
“I have a lot of thinking to do about it,” he said in explaining he wasn’t leaning either way at the moment. “My decision will be made Wednesday. I decommitted and I’m open minded about it.” Jones made his official visit to Maryland this past weekend after leaving USC.
Jones will have three years to play two at the next level. This season he had 38 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
