drivers were running for the Coca Cola 600 pole, USC moved into the pole position in the race for Putnam. USC offensive line coach Shawn Elliott went to the school today and offered Putnam in person and made the offer strictly off his junior film.

“He just said he didn’t need me at camp or anything, said he liked what he saw and he really had all he needed,” Putnam said. “My head coach is sitting there listening and he’s like, ‘well, you know I haven’t heard the word yet.’ And then Coach Elliott was went ahead and he was like, ‘yeah, we’re going to go ahead and offer him.’ And I was stunned right there. It was a surprise to me.”

Putnam said Elliott didn’t push for a commitment from him today but he’s thinking about it and has a plan.

“Most definitely, they are at the top of my list hands down,” he said. “Coach Elliott was pretty big on me coming down June 13th to get to know the coaches and work out for an hour. If all goes well, by then, if everything is great and nothing new has popped up and everything has fallen into place, I probably would commit that day or the day after.”

Florida State and Vanderbilt called Putnam’s coach today to inquire about him. He said he might visit Vanderbilt this summer as well. And he is expecting other big schools to come in on him. His other offers are Elon, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb and Charlotte.

Putnam plays left tackle and also plays on the defensive line. He said coaches tell him they love his speed and agility on the line. ‘

“I kind of pride myself on being flexible and being able to run,” he said. “I run a 5.0 constantly in the forty and my shuttle is around a 4.6.”

Putnam also plays basketball for his high school team.
